Little - by Kristin Corlett
This is a travellers palm with a little tiny flower hanging from it. I have no idea if this flower has come from the palm or from some other plant, all I know is that I thought it was very very cool...and little. This was found in the courtyard between the DWR store and a book store in South Beach.

ReplyDeleteNot the palm...palms are monocots; the flower comes from a dicot. Monocots have seeds containing one leaf, usually long leaves w/parallel veins (grasses, lillies, eg); Dicots have seeds containing two leaves, usually differently shaped leaves w/net-like veins (maples, roses).
ReplyDeleteI believe what you have there is an epiphyte! An epiphyte is a plant that grows on another plant for support. AND, your epiphyte is definitely a dicot. I wonder if it is some form of orchid - - - many of those are epiphytes.

Um, I believe it's either fallen off or hanging off another plant.
ReplyDeleteAn epiphyte actually gets more than support, it derives all its nutrients (oxygen, minerals,etc) from its environment.
ReplyDeleteAgain, sorry, but orchids are monocots (monoctlyedon, meaning one embryonic leaf within the seed, as opposed to dicotyledon, two embryonic leaves within the seed).
It's a sweet little flower that either fell into the palm or is growing behind that palm.
