POTD - Self Starter

POTD - Self Starter
© 2011 Kristin Corlett

This Remington Rand typewriter has a key that says Self Starter.  I thought that was pretty funny as I could use a self starter button myself.  I need to get out of bed - press the self starter button!  I need to toss myself in the shower - press the self starter button!  Can't you see just how valuable a button like this could be?!

Well, its actual use isn't terribly exciting, but it is a good idea.  The self starter button actually advanced the carriage 5 spaces to start a new paragraph.  This particular model of the Remington Rand Typewriter, I do believe, was made between Dec 1928 and June 1938 according to the photos and descriptions I found at this site.  I think that I would like to have a typewriter again some day, as a prop mostly or a display piece, but that's definitely someday.  It'd just end up in a closet or I'd end up selling it.  Once again, a photograph fills the void.  For more information (tons of information) on Remington Typewriters, click here.

Enjoy!

  1. Ohhh, thank you for that! When I was a kid (about three weeks after the original typewriter was invented), my folks let me use it and I had a stack of typing paper--and I set to work on "my book". I had to wait until my typing skills improved (a lot) before I could make much progress though. It was hard work typing on those puppies!!!

  3. That is so interesting. I remember typing on old typewritters with keys like that, but not with that self starter key.

  4. I've seen a couple of posts about old typewriters lately! Maybe we're on technology overload? I could totally use a self starter button! Kind of like a nurse call button that I could take under the blankets with me! I'd have to hit it along with the 2nd, or 3rd, tap of the snooze control button!
