Yesterday when I was finding photos for my list of things that make me happy, I came across this photo of Baby Go Bye Bye.
I loved my Baby Go Bye Bye. I sold or gave away all of my dolls a few years ago, so I don't think I have her any more, but she was in excellent condition. He car never made it to my adulthood, but I will never forget that birthday.
That box is distinctive and bright colored. If you saw it once, you'd never forget it.
Here's the story.
I was never one to peek at gifts or go looking for hiding spots. I didn't open my Christmas gifts and try to hide it. I wanted to wait. But just before my birthday my Mom asked me to go into her closet to get something. Maybe it was her shoes because whatever it was, it was on the floor of the closet and I pushed aside a long dress and saw this box.
I was so excited and then I was so sad. I saw it. I knew what I was getting. It was crushing to me. I never told my Mom though. I didn't want her to know that I saw it.
So here I am at my birthday party, with my grandparents. That's my Dad's folks behind me and my Mom's on the right. (I talked about this photo and my grandparents, here) I was a moody child, but that wasn't the case here, it was the box. The big, tall, cool looking box that I would have been so excited to open, was already spoiled for me.
Thankfully I got over it!
Here we have moved the birthday to the dining room.
The "4" on the cake is wooden.
Just now I went to go get it from it's safe keeping spot, but it must have been put somewhere else.
I hate that! Oh well.
I still have it though. It's great. You'll just have to trust me on that :)
My Aunt Gail is adjusting the pins in her hair and she's sitting in the greatest chair ever. It was the King chair, as I always called it. The fabric was red velvet or velour, so you couldn't slide around on it, but it looked so regal.
This is the last photo of the birthday party. I don't know what else I received, but once I was able to get excited about the gift, I enjoyed it.
That experience at the age of 4 affected me for life. I will not peek if I know something is a secret. My Mom has always been able to say, for example, "I have gifts in that bag sitting in the living room" and I'd never look. I'd walk by and close my eyes or treat that room like it had the plague. I have never once wanted to see a gift early again. My sisters are the same way.
My blogging friend, qandle queen at A Walk Through My Little World, had a birthday party this summer and asked us to find our own kid birthday photos for that event. I couldn't find these photos (just like I can't find the 4) but when I found them last night I was so excited. These were what I wanted to share for her event. Here I am, a few months late!! :)
Have a great day!

YAY!!! I love birthday pictures!!!! I'm totally clapping! And I totally get not wanting your surprise ruined. It kills me to know what other people are getting too. My mom would always tell me what she got for my kids - IT SUCKED! Not the gift (although usually it did), but the knowing. UGH!
I remember Baby Go Bye Bye!
My prized baby doll was "Bless You Baby TenderLove". I found one on Ebay and bought it for my girls. I loved her!
Wow...this explains a lot, doesn't it?!
Have you shared this story with your mom yet? I can just hear her reaction: "Ooh Kres...." (meaningful shake of her head)
No that is a special story. I agree, my brother & sister always wanted to find the gifts, NOT ME!
I taught that to my children too, why would you want to ruin the special day. Sorry you saw that in the closet but like you said, you got over it. I love the pictures, this made the story so enjoyable.
Thanks for showing us Baby Go Bye-Bye, though I'm wondering about the wisdom of having toddlers driving.
I've never seen her before. My daughters were not doll kids, and they usually wanted the sports gear their brothers got.
My Kris's greatest present was a Packer football jersey and helmet and every friend that visited had to don them and have their picture taken. She'd written the most pathetic letter to Santa, begging for them! What a kid.
