25 years ago - give or take a few months

25 years ago, give or take a few months, my best friend Steve and I got into the car and drove to Joe Louis Arena. Steve's friend had won tickets to a Lionel Richie concert on the radio a few days earlier and decided that Steve and I would have a lot more fun. He was right.

I got dressed up, as cool as I could possibly get. I was SO uncool as a teenager...but I do remember the torture I went through to find some sort of outfit that would help me to blend in with the other throngs of people going to the concert. I cannot remember at all what Steve was wearing. Sorry Steve! lol

I drove. I always drove when Steve and I were together. Actually, he might not have been 16 yet - well anyway, I drove.

I managed to make it to the arena without incident. I followed the signs, drove right there.

Lionel Richie's concert was incredible. I remember how he arrived on stage - a silver sparkley piano came out of the floor and started turning. Lionel Richie was on that piano. It was the grandest entrance I had ever seen. It was the best concert ever!! Steve and I danced and sang and danced and sang.

The concert ended and we left.

That's when I got lost.

I couldn't find my way to the expressway. I drove around and around and around until I saw a Denny's restaurant. I pulled in, hoping to get some directions. I walked in and immediately went to the first person I saw and said "I'm lost." He said - "You sure are honey."

Detroit wasn't known for being extra friendly at that time and in that area of town, but I got directions and a scolding (Get out of here, quickly, he said) and Steve and I were on our way back to Lansing.

I have been watching a few hours of the "80 hours of 80's music" on VH-1 Classics this weekend. Lionel Richey was just on and it brought about this recollection. I love how that happens. I think I'm going to call Steve tomorrow...He'll remember that night.

This is Steve and I taken last February.

Have a great day!

Some good food

Meatloaf

I didn't grow up eating Meatloaf. In fact I don't recall my mother ever making it. I had a boyfriend though that loved it and he made a pretty good one. This isn't his recipe LOL This recipe is adapted from Saving Dinner. The way I make it, it doesn't stay together as well as I'd like, but it tastes SO good, that it doesn't matter.

Barbecue Meatloaf
Preheat oven 375˚

2 pounds meatloaf mix (usually hamburger and pork) or just hamburger.
1-2 t chili powder
Salt and Pepper to taste
4 oz can of corn kernels, drained
1 small jar of Pimentos, drained (2-3 oz)
1 onion chopped (you know how much onion you'd like - I use one large onion coarsely chopped)
1 can mushrooms, drained (press out as much water as possible) and coarsely chopped.
5 slices of bread - tear it, cut it, just get it into smallish pieces.
3 large eggs slightly beaten
2/3 cup barbecue sauce. We love Sonny's Sweet BBQ sauce.

You will need a large baking sheet with sides (I put parchment paper on it - but not mandatory)

Combine all ingredients into a bowl and mix with your hands. Place the mixture in a loaf like blob on the baking sheet. Bake for one hour or until cooked through. I usually put a thin layer of BBQ sauce over the top of the meatloaf after about 45 minutes.

Let stand for a few minutes before cutting. This meatloaf freezes beautifully and makes great leftovers.

Serve with baked sweet potatoes or a salad or both!
Enjoy.

More Flavorful Recipes

This is a post totally taken - word for word for word from a blog called Mama Says
- she had a WFMW post that I bookmarked and then promptly lost and then found it again tonight. So as not to lose it again, I hauled it over here. I don't really remember cooking tips too well. I have a few up my sleeve that I pull out every so often, but really, I just make it up as I go along.

I like these ideas. Maybe you will, too!

Thanks Mama!

WFMW: Five Ingredients or Less
Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Most of my recipes contain five ingredients or less, unless I'm baking. What can I say? I'm lazy.

So lazy, in fact, I use McCormick Montreal Steak Seasoning on my porkchops. (It's good. Try it!)

Instead, I'll leave you with five tips for making any recipe more flavorful, the healthy way!

1. Caramelize those onions. If you have a recipe that called for sliced or chopped onion, it will taste sooo much better if you cook the onions first. If you have carrots and celery, cook it all together until the onion is translucent and starts to color. You've added depth of flavor without adding any salt or calories!

2. Don't ignore the lower half. Don't just sprinkle some powder over the top of your chops. Season one side, rub it in, then season the other. Whatever you do, don't leave the bottom - the first part that touches your taste buds - bland!

3. Skip the water. In most savory recipes asking for water, substitute another flavorful liquid instead. Juice, milk, broth, or even wine will make it taste that much better. For easy homemade chicken stock, sans MSG, throw the bones in your crockpot, cover with water, and cook for several hours. Throw in some carrot peels or celery tops if you're feeling sassy. Strain and freeze. I freeze mine in muffin cups, for ease of thawing. Also, my muffin cups hold right at 1/2 cup of liquid, so I can measure without dirtying a cup. Bonus - chip the layer of fat off and it's a healthy addition to any meal!

4. Bland = Butter. And salt. Possibly even salted butter, all added at the table by your family to make their starch tasty. Avoid this by adding guiltless flavor. A splash of vinegar or squeeze of lemon may be all that's needed to brighten a dish. Shake some garlic powder into the mashed potatoes, and use that fat free broth instead of milk and butter. Rice can be cooked in chicken stock instead of water, and noodles can be coated with an olive oil vinaigrette before serving. Make your own - 1 part vinegar, 2 parts olive oil, add seasonings to taste.

5. Salsa is your friend. And a cool dance. I use salsa a lot. I love Peach Pineapple Chipotle poured on pork chops and baked (it's a WalMart house brand flavor). It adds kick to anything, along with some vegetable nutrition and good phytochemicals, such as lycopene. It can be stirred into rice, used as a glaze for meat, or even served as a side with vegetable dippers.

Gratuitous Five Ingredient Recipe:
Carne Guisada, a good simple meal.

Ingredients:
Steak, cut up (like stew meat)
Potatoes
Salsa
Broth
Onions if your feeling like Susie Homemaker
Salt and pepper, to taste.

Wash (or peel) and boil potatoes. Drain, mash using broth.

Cook onion until it starts to color. Add meat. Brown on all sides, then add salsa. Add enough to coat the meat. Cook meat some more. Add some water until you get a little "gravy" action. Serve over potatoes.

Yes. This is how I really cook. You know how much meat and potatoes your family eats, you don't need me to tell you! See, I've saved you the math headache of doubling or halving my recipe!

Six Degrees of Seperation

This morning my husband had a lab appointment at Mayo Clinic. He was originally scheduled to go yesterday, but he was still traveling so I rescheduled it for this morning. When he arrived for his appointment he sat next to this woman in the waiting area. She was talking with someone else but she was talking about Project Runway. Apparently her niece is Kenley Collins. Guess that makes my husband just two degrees from Kenley and three degrees from all the other designers and judges.

How Fun!

My dear husband did what any good husband would do - He immediately picked up the phone and called me. He said "Have you ever heard of Kenley Collins?" Since he woke me up, I couldn't answer him before he told me the story of who he was sitting next to and that he was glad we watched it last night so he knew all about the show. The Aunt asked my husband to ask me if I liked Kenley. Of course I said yes. Goodness LOL I couldn't begin to remember what outfit she sent down the runway last night though - so we watched it again this morning when he got home.

I guess I'm glad he couldn't make his appointment yesterday!

Kristin

He's Home

My husband is home.

He looks good.

I hope that means he had a fairly relaxing trip.

I know I did!

It was real nice to have him home after almost three weeks away.

The cat, however, still has not given him the time of day.

After he changed clothes and relaxed a bit, I asked Tom to please go through his bags and take out all of his dirty clothes. Usually this happens in the middle of the living room - he just opens up the suitcases and starts pulling out trashbags and hotel laundry bags of clothing, then closes his suitcase and walks away. The suitcases could live in this place for weeks, if it were up to him.

This time...this time! He took the suitcases into the bedroom. Handed me all of the bags of clothing, then proceeded to unpack the suitcases and put them away.

I about fell over.

I didn't even have to suggest that he might want to unpack real quick.

I didn't have to suggest he help me put the suitcases away.

He just put them away.

I said Thank You several times out loud...and several more times to myself.

Thank You, Tom.

The next thing...

I mentioned to Tom several hours before he got home that there was an issue with the ball float in the toilet tank in the master bath. I had purchased all of the supplies needed, but was a bit nervous about installing it myself. I asked if he could do it or would do it. He said yes. Not a problem.

I still assumed that it was going to be a real hassle and he was going to be really grumpy about fixing it, especially after having driven for 8 hours.

After he unpacked his suitcases he fixed the problem in the toilet tank. He needed to replace a whole section of the fittings and it took about 30 minutes, but he wasn't the least bit grumpy or upset.

I love that he took several weeks off.

I really enjoyed this guy that came home tonight.

Welcome Home Tom!

WFMW - Painting Tips

One of the quickest and easiest ways to transform a room is with paint. If I've heard that once I've heard it a million times. The actual painting process is fairly quick - it's the prep work that takes time and is so very important. Cleaning out the room also takes time.

Prepping the walls, taping off the windows, patching holes and all the assorted other prep work is the most tedious part, but it is soooo important.

The other day I went to Home Depot and took pictures of all (hopefully all!) of the essential items needed to successfully prep and paint a room. I have gone through hundreds of dollars buying things that don't work. I've literally bought into the hype of some products only to be seriously disappointed. I've also bought into hype to be pleasantly surprised! I will guide you.

The first thing you want to do is pick up items to do prep work.

I like to use just one drop cloth, small is better so I can move it around easily. I like the fabric ones because I can wash it and keep it for future use and they aren't slippery to walk on. They also straighten out easily when moving them around the room.

Painting rags. Love them. I like to buy a box of them so I don't run out and so I can always find one to use. I also wash these as well and then store them in a giant ziploc bag for future projects.

A block sander is awesome. It can sand wet or dry - It is easy to hold and can sand out the spackle off the wall in a jif!

Blue Tape. I buy it by the case LOL It is great for taping off doors and windows, floors and ceilings. When we had our wooden floors refinished we got rolls of paper to cover the floor and taped the sheets together with blue tape & also taped the whole thing to the floor with blue tape. I cover light switches with blue tape, too. Take off the switch plates & outlet covers and put a 2" - 3" piece of tape over the outlet or the switch. This saves you a lot of time cutting in around the switches and outlets. You can just paint right over the top and peel off the tape.

This is one of those products that actually works. You can tape off basebaords and door trim in a matter of seconds with this great product.

This Dri-dex is the best ever. It goes on purple and dries white. You always know when it's dry because it stays purple the entire time it's wet. Great product. It also comes in a tube. Both are nice, quality products.

Get a good quality spackling knife/putty knife. Get one that's flexible. I personally like the straight edged knife, but others like the chisel. I'd go for straight if you are a beginner.

Caulk. Oh, I love caulk. I had never used caulk before (except for around the tub in my bathroom) but when we renovated a house recently, caulk was my best friend. I caulked around windows, the joints in baseboards, crown moulding and any place else that needed to have a flexible seal. The picture is caulk that goes into a caulk gun, but it comes in tubes, too. Get some. You won't be sorry. Make sure you get paintable caulk.

Finally we are coming to painting supplies!

This is what you will need to paint.

A metal paint tray. You don't need to spend a lot of money on this product. Get the cheap one.

This is the BEST product. These tray liners just slip right into that metal tray. If you need to change colors, just pop the tray and the paint into a tall kitchen trash bad (gently of course, so as not to spill the paint) and get out another tray liner and use a different color.

This is the paint roller cage of choice for me. It has a small thin long handle. It makes it easy for a person of 5'2" to reach a 9' ceiling without having to use a ladder or an extension pole. It also doesn't splatter like a regular roller does, when you roll it on the wall. (I rarely use a drop cloth when I paint with these)

This roller cage is so much lighter than the regular one. The roller covers, below, hold a little less paint, but my body hurts a lot less when I use these products. I can also paint all day, rather than just a few hours at a time. You can get this little roller behind so many things, too - toilets & towel bars for example. I love love love this product.

This purply/pink roller is OK. Good for small projects. One of these actually comes with the roller, but I usually change it out for the beige one.

This beige one -- Ooooh, it is thick and soaks up a lot of paint. It is good for textured walls and smooth walls. My husband teased about using the tiny roller for painting and then when I wasn't looking, he was using my roller!

This is a foam roller. I hate them. They don't seem to soak up much paint at all. The paint that does go on the wall is such a thin coat, that it becomes tacky far too quick and you can't roll over it a few seconds later. I don't recommend this type of roller.

I love the PURDY brushes. Get a quality brush. Pay about $10 - $20 for a 2- 2.5 inch brush. I like the angled brush - makes it easier to paint trim. When you are finished with the brush, wash it out. It will last you for years and years and years. If you need to just stop painting for a little while place the brush into a baggie (below) and roll it up, keeping the air out. It will last that way for a whole day (but try to not make it wait that long before you wash it out)

This is an edger. I like this brand - but I like the one that has the attachment for a extension pole - only because it has a tab at the top that keeps the paint pad from scooting up too far. These work pretty well. Just don't go too fast or you may lose control LOL

This is a really great extension pole. It has a little push button and it expands and contracts -- really awesome. I loved this one - and it is easier to store.

There is always a time when you need to have a trim paint tray. This is my favorite tray. It is easy to hold and it is deep enough that you can put a lot of paint in it. It also fits in the baggies, so it can store for awhile without having to pour it back into the can.

These are my paint baggies. They are just baggies - no zippers. They are thin enough to use easily and they are thick enough to keep the air out. They fit brushes and roller covers. They even fit the little trim paint tray.

This is how I use the baggies on the roller covers. I can also take the cover off the cage and save the roller to come back to in a few days.

Last but not least....

I like to keep my paint cans clean so that the lids fit on nicely and don't get clogged up with paint. These little beauties fit right on the side of the can and makes it easy to pour. They are cheap, too. Pick up a couple. You can put one of those baggies over the top of the can (when you have the pouring lip on it) to save it from drying out, until you put the lid back on. Put the lid in a baggie, too if you want.

You will also need a paint can opener. I don't have a picture of one, but if you have a real paint can opener you will be much happier when trying to open paint cans.

Goodness, that took me all day to get together LOL Had I known, I would have started this post a few days ago. I hope that if you decide to take on a painting project that you come back to this list. If I have forgotten something, I'll add it in.

Thanks for coming to visit me this week!! Rocks in my Dryer is hosting Works For Me Wednesday after being on hiatus for a few weeks this summer. Please click on her blog and find all sorts of wonderful WFMW posts from hundreds of other bloggers.

Have a great day!

Cakes Gone Wrong

Have you ever been reading something online and then you click on a link, and then another and another and you end up no where near where you started?? Well that happened to me this morning.

I love where I ended up.

I thought I'd share with you my find.

Cake Wrecks is a website that shares pictures of bad cakes. You will just have to go check it out. I got a belly laugh several times.

Here's a Taste!

I guess this was the picture that started the whole website Cake Wrecks. I even got this same picture via email. It started a trend I guess!
I didn't get it the first few seconds, but "under neat that" was a direction "Underneath that" - cracks me up every time!

The next three photos comes from the post called What We Have Here is a Failure to Communicate

Here we have Welcome. Notice just the one quote mark.

Calvin likes Green. Calvin would have liked to have had the piping on his cake to be green. Instead he just got the word green.

Can you imagine picking this up at the cake place LOL

A cake that I'd get would be something like this.

Happy Birthday Kristin,
spelled with an I not an E.

Hope you enjoyed a little cake today. Go check out Cake Wrecks. I know it's going to be one of my weekly stops.

The Wave

I was talking with a friend yesterday and I told her that my husband was coming home in a few days. He's been gone for a little over two weeks. I've watched movies he wouldn't like to watch, I've watched TV shows he doesn't like. I watched almost every hour of the Olympics that I could handle. I slept on the couch, I made dinners that only I enjoy and I spent one entire day in my pajamas. I had a really great vacation at home. I didn't just watch TV, either, I read some, I was on the computer a lot and I did quite a bit of walking. (just in case you all were worried that I became embedded in the couch!)

I went on to tell her that I was ready for him to come home. I needed someone to talk to. The cat just wasn't listening much anymore. I'd already talked to the walls, not like Shirley Valentine, but I was jabbering at anything in the house.

I know I've been alone for a long time because the boredom dork in me was coming out.

I was doing the Queen's wave in the house. I waved at the TV, the couch, my reflection, the cat, the bedroom - I waved at everything.

I was perfecting my wave each time, too.

Next time I'm called up to sit on the back of a car and wave to crowds of people, I'll be ready!

Have a great day!
Kristin

Kitchen Aid Mixer

Don't those Kitchen Aids look wonderful.
They look sexy somehow.
I was lured into the sexiness of a Kitchen Aid once, a long time ago and finally got one. (It's white) I have never used it. Nope, never.

It doesn't fit in any of my cabinets and my countertops are already filled up, so I have no where to put it. It ended up in a storage closet 5 flights down from where I cook. That's not convenient.

I want to love my Kitchen Aid, but right now, I don't even know where the attatchments are. Hmmmm, I wonder.

Well, if you have been thinking that YOU might like to get a Kitchen Aid Mixer for your home, the wonderful PIONEER WOMAN is giving three of them away.

Randomly.

To anyone who leaves a comment in the cooking section of her blog, here, and you tell her what is your favorite dessert.

My favorite dessert is Cookie Brittle - although technically it's spelled Kookie Brittle.

Kookie Brittle

Ingredients:

1 cup butter
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
2 cups flour
6 ounces Nestle's Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Combine butter, vanilla and salt in a bowl and blend well. Gradually beat in sugar. Add flour and chocolate chips; mix well. Press mixture evenly into an ungreased 10x15-inch baking pan. Sprinkle nuts over top and gently press into dough.

At this point you can chill it in the fridge if the dough is a little soft, right on the baking sheet.

Bake for 25 minutes.

Watch it like a hawk the last 5 minutes. I end up burning it half the time.

Cool completely in pan, then break Kookie Brittle into irregular pieces. Store in air-tight container. Makes about 1 3/4 pounds of brittle.

I have found this recipe in Helen's Collection - she even gives a little background to the recipe. She adds additional Chocolate chips to her recipe, but I don't think it's necessary. It is really good the way it is.

That's my favorite dessert, if Cookies are considered dessert. Go to Pioneer Woman's website and sign up for a chance to win a Kitchen Aid. Maybe I can find the attatchments to mine in the meantime.

How to Bake a Sweet Potato

How to Bake the Perfect Sweet Potato

Preheat oven to 450º
Put a foil* lined baking sheet into the oven on the lowest rack.
*parchment works well, too

Place sweet potatoes onto the rack above the baking sheet.

Don't poke any holes into the potatoes, just place on the rack.

Set timer for 20 minutes.

When the timer goes off, decrease baking temperature to 350º

Bake for an additional 60 minutes. Set your timer again.

Depending on the size of your sweet potaotes you may want to increase or decrease this time, but I've found that an hour is just about right for two large sweet potatoes.

When the sweet potatoes are done a knife will easily slip through the potato. The skin may be tough to get through, the potato itself will be soft.

The exterior of the potato will look like this

You can poke at the skin and it feels puffy. I poked at it several times!

That pocket forms because of the high temperature at the beginning of the baking cycle.

The skin literally peels off in a matter of seconds. The inside has been steamed and baked at the same time, so it stays really moist without being wet or dry. Ooooh it is fabulous.

I bake these two at a time, eat part of one potato for my meal and save the rest in the fridge. These microwave real easy after baking, too - just scoop out your portion, nuke for 30 seconds to one minute and eat!

Thanks Mom! They turned out great!

Olympic Medal Count Map

One of the really neat blogs that I read is Design Mom. She talks about her kids, her home, design in all areas (Clothing, interiors, exteriors, etc) and then just fun stuff. A few days ago Design Mom posted this awesome find. It is an
Olympic Medal Count Map
that's interactive. You can scroll through the years of the Summer Olympics and see the medal counts. This is this years map. Cool, huh?

Thanks Design Mom!

I found a family!

The past couple of years my husband and I have owned and maintained three condos that we rent out to people going through transplant surgeries at the Mayo Clinic here in Jacksonville. That was a mouthful. It is one of the ways that Tom and I are able to give back to the community that helped us through some really dark days and have literally given my husband a very good life the past few years.

Summer seems to be the hardest time for me to find a new family to rent. If I have my places already rented before June arrives, then chances are real good that they'll stay for awhile. If one of my units opens up in the summer, I don't seem get it rented until about this time of year.

This is the case, now. I've had one of my rentals open for three months. The other two have been rented (Thanks be!) but not this one. One of the nice things was that we got a chance to replace the carpet in the living room with a laminate floor - so that was nice. You can see the new floor in the picture above. (See that neon green blob on the entryway cabinet? That's my tape measure. Boy, I'm glad that got in the picture!)

Today a lovely family moved in.

Yea!!

Yea!!

They needed me and I needed them. I love how that works. I get a new family to learn from and they get an instant family member, ME! Once someone finds us, they become family. We talk about such intimate things like livers and lungs and colonoscopies and drainage tubes. We also talk about family, home, babies, children, restaurants, vacations, etc. We talk and laugh and cry together.

This was the perfect family to move in to one of my places. The husband in this team is the patient. The wife can't stay too long, she has to go back home to work. This is where I can help. I can be there as a friend, someone close by to call for any reason and I can also help with doctors appointments when necessary. The wife really doesn't want to leave, I'm sure they are going to have to push her onto the plane but I hope it eases her mind a bit that her husband is across the hall from another transplant family and that I am just a phone call away.

To read about a few of my other patients, please click on the label Transplant.

Oh and Walter -- I wrote a few posts on Walter in the transplant section --- He went home last week, right on time. He came through all of his early trouble with flying colors. He called today to make sure we made it through T.S. Fay. I love Walter.

Have a great week!

Fay is almost gone

This was the weather when we FINALLY got our power back today around 6pm.
We were without power for almost 24 hours. We had a few hours of power this morning but the wind and rain was just non stop.

There was this beautiful "dry eye" right in the center of the storm, but we never saw it. The entire first floor of our condo building is wet. No one lives on the first floor - it holds our storage closets, the lobby, the parking garage and the exterior private garages. We've had trouble with water getting into our building before and now after this storm, I guess we all know that the problem wasn't fixed.

I am watching the news right now and they are reporting on all of people who were driving in this storm. The roads all over town are flooded - extreme flooding. Why do people feel the need to drive? I hardly felt the need to walk down 5 flights of stairs to get the mail, I did it, but I wasn't thrilled. You couldn't have paid me to drive anywhere. I have three rental units - I'll check them tomorrow :)

I will sleep well tonight, the A/C is on, the ceiling fans are whirling, the fridge is cooling and I've got internet. My house is dry and I'm very happy. I hope that everyone who are in the path of Fay now have fewer days of it and less water.

Sleep well,
Kristin

On the Water

My husband and I are so different. Sometimes I wonder what in the world got us together in the first place! He was in law school when I met him. I was working in the coffeehouse that my Mother owned, called The Dancing Goat Coffeehouse, The Goat for short. I loved the place so much, I named my blog The Goat.

Our Coffeehouse was right across the street from the law school, so we got a lot of those students. Poor folks, they always had such sad, sleep deprived eyes towards the end of the semester.

Tom was totally different. He actually was from our town, rather than a person just there for school. He was loud, fun, annoying, funny, and interesting. One of the other students told me that he was "Rude, Crude and Socially Unacceptable." Can you believe that? It totally hooked me. LOL He had some really great law school friends, though, really great. He was not a morning person and he had a class at 8am. We were his first stop before class. I worked mornings and when he came in, I made it my job to pick on him. He was just so grumpy and I just couldn't have that! So it was my job to pick on him enough to make him come back after class. It worked I guess lol We've been together since 1994.

(That certainly was the fast version of our story)

We still didn't have a whole lot in common and he still drives me batty, but in a good way, most of the time. A few of the things that he loves, I do not. He likes boats. He likes living on the water. He would love to live on boat, oh Lord, unless it was a large cruise ship, I'm not into that.

This past week Tom has been hanging out on a boat. His friends boat. He had a blast. I am just so glad I wasn't there! He is a whole lot less grumpy when he's hanging out on a boat, listening to music with his friends. Every time he called he had a song in his voice. It was so nice to hear.

This entire story came about in my head because of this website - Island Homes. I stumbled upon this website and thought about how one of these places might just be my husbands ultimate dream home.

He'd be living there by himself, but maybe that would make it even more ultimate! Nawwww, he'd miss me too much. I'd be across the water, living in my beach house, NOT on the beach.

Have a great day!
Kristin

I'm waiting to see how Jacksonville handles a storm. I have been through several hurricanes when we lived in Daytona Beach. I even had to go to the relief center to get a bag of ice and some of those Delicious MRE's. (Meals Ready to Eat) I was very thankful that I had a gas grill with a burner on the side. Although Hurricane Francis was a wind maker for so many days, that I couldn't use the grill very much - but enough to heat up some water to wash up.

The weather guys around here keep saying that the storm is coming right through Jax. They are almost excited about it. One weather guy said that they just recently redid the model and the storm will now do a big circle around Jacksonville. It will go out to sea and then come back and get us again. Oh dear - the news folks are so ever hopeful for something "exciting" to say.

I do hope that everyone in th path of the storm stays safe and reacts smart.

Update 10:30pm Tuesday.
The storm is just sitting in the middle of Florida. This is good and bad. The good is that it isn't getting stronger, but the bad is that it is just beating the crap out of the middle of Florida. Hurricane Francis stayed over the top of Daytona Beach (and other locations lol) for four days. It was one of the longest weeks ever. The howling of the wind through the house, the rain pouring non stop, no power, no nothing - it was exhausting. I really feel for those folks in lower Florida.

Jacksonville is going to get some of it - I just hope it's not too much rain - I have two condos on the ground floor of a complex and they will flood with 3" of water. I'm already wondering where to get sandbags for those two places.

Update Wednesday 20 August, 2008
1:00pm

Tropical Storm Fay crossed through Florida and the eye of the storm has finally made it to the Atlantic Ocean right near Cape Canaveral. It's still headed North and East, but hopefully it won't strengthen.

Fay has dumped 10.5 inches of rain in Melbourne, FL, 11 inches in Ft. Pierce, FL, and 8.5 at Vero Beach. The Miami area only received 4 inches of rain while West Palm Beach saw 7 inches.

Jacksonville is under a Tropical Storm warning, a Flood Warning, a Hurricane Watch, a High Winds Advisory and a Tornado Watch. Not bad!

Right now we just have pouring rain. One of the rain bands is coming through.

This is what's happening now. Go to the Weather Channel to see more detailed maps.

UPDATE 21 AUGUST 11:35 AM
Fay has hardly moved - we are still getting rain and wind. We aren't getting the flooding yet, but it looks like the rain will continue for the next several days.

I'm going to assume that we are going to be just fine, so I'm going to retire this post for a day or so.

OK, well, I decided to post a few more maps from Weather.com

Update - 12:03AM 22 August

Fay has made it onto land again - it is now moving at the excruciatingly slow speed of 2 MPH - TWO miles per hour? I've never heard of storm moving that slow.

We've lost power several times today. Twice for more than a few hours - about ten times just flickering. Enough to shut down my computer.

Rain rain rain wind rain rain rain.

I have to say - Hurricane Francis stayed around for several days and the wind was maddening. I though I was going to lose my mind with all of the whistling and howling that was coming into the house. I could hear the garage doors banging non stop. This storm is much quieter, just a lot of rain.

I'm going to bed. We'll see if she's moved more than 10 miles by the time I wake up!
