POTD - Equinox Motel

POTD - Equinox Motel

Is it a coincidence that I photographed the sign for the Equinox Motel just a few hours before the official Autumnal Equinox?  Oh I think not!  I was guided to this hotel, I'm just sure of it :)

Happy Autumn!

Double Twilight

I learned a lesson today and I'm not really sure I can explain it in my own words, so I'll quote someone else instead.  I have to admit though, that I read the article and STILL had no idea what they meant.  It wasn't until my husband pointed out the obvious that I got it.  But we had to be on the beach standing in the middle of it before I got it.

from GIZMODO

Prepare for the Super Harvest Moon! For the first time in two decades, the Sun will sink as the full Moon rises exactly opposite to it on the day the summer ends, creating a strange 360-degree twilight show.

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, today is the autumnal equinox and a Super Harvest Moon will cross the sky after almost 20 years since the last time it happened. When the Sun starts to set on the Western horizon, a full moon will rise opposite to it on the East, reflecting the light of our home star.

Being close to the horizon, the orange Moon will be gigantic thanks to a psychological effect called the Moon illusion. The sky will be illuminated by the Sun and the Moon at the same time, creating a weird 360-degree effect that is rarely seen.

Sometimes I wonder just how dense my brain really is - sheesh.

Here is the 360º view I saw this evening between 6:45pm and 7:15pm.

This is the West and a view of the clouds near the setting sun.

This is a view of the Northern sky.

Here is the Eastern Sky and the moon has already traveled pretty high in the sky.  It was too cloudy and we never got to see that Super Harvest Moon.

I may have stuck out my bottom lip, stomped my foot in the sand and made a small whine sound.

I may not have done that.

You know I totally did!
and I think I stomped both feet.

This is the Southern view.

If you look at all of the photos it's a 360º view of twilight.  The Eastern skyline isn't dark at all and in fact, if you didn't know this was a sunset, it could look like a sunrise view.  This is what is called the double twilight.  It was soooo coool.

Even though we didn't get to see the Super Harvest Moon,  Tom and I actually made a point to hightail it out of the house on a moments notice and drive down to the beach to be a part of the event.  I read about the Super Harvest Moon at approx 5:50pm and I had chicken in the oven at the time.  Thankfully the chicken only needed about 15 more minutes, so we impatiently waited for the chicken to finish, hauled it out of the oven, put it in a dish and tossed it in the fridge.

Tom and I really aren't the spontaneous type.

I should restate that -  we aren't very spontaneous after about 4pm!

Once we take off our shoes we're pretty much home bodies, so this was an unusual trip.

I'm so very happy that we went because it was magical.  We even saw someone on the beach that we knew!

Have a great day! and welcome to Autumn

POTD - Rotary Dial

POTD - Rotary Dial
©2010 Kristin Corlett

I was wandering around an antique store when I spied this rotary dial phone.  I can still hear the sound the phone makes when I used to use my own rotary dial phone so many years ago.  Growing up my phone number was rotary dial friendly as all the numbers were five and under!

Enjoy!
Kristin

When I posted this on FB we had quite a lively conversation so I'm editing this post and adding in these comments.

#
Ruth Ann -I have two rotary phones in my house a pink one and a brown one like pictured! They are very special to me because my grandparents always had one in their house! Everytime I hear one ring, I think of them!

#
Me --See?! You do have things to photograph that are very cool :)

#
Lisa -My husband still has a white one, just like this in the garage. He's mad because when we switched to digital phone, it stopped dialing out. Thankfully he can still answer calls from it though. He refuses to switch to the new wireless with caller ID I bought for the garage.

#
Julie- We have one too.....in the Basement (dungeon).

#
Mom -still have the red dial phone up in the attic. I always hate to answer it tho.....never know who it is :o))

#
Steven -I have a red "bat phone" just like it in my basement

#
Sharon -Makes me think of the cartoon where the Mom is looking everywhere for the "cordless" phone and her 5 or 6yr. old said "why don't they put a cord on it so you could find it easier?"hehe

#
Kelly -And, do you remember when you thought you were cool if your car had an AM/FM radio AND a cassette player???

#
Nancy -Or how about the 8- track player?

#
Julie -8 track..I had one in the "Big Blue Van" my mom and dad let me drive when I was a teen. Along with my only 2 tapes (Three Dog Night and KC and The Sunshine Band) wooooohoooo

#
Alison -We also had a big blue van with an 8 track.

#
Me -We had a few 8 tracks for that blue van - We may have had KC, too - but I know for sure we had a Dolly Parton 8 track. It had the song Jolene on it.

I didn't realize that the rotary dial phone would bring up so many stories - I love it!! It's been great reading all of these and knowing that the rotary dial isn't extinct :)

#
Nancie -My very first personal phone put in my bedroom (this was 1968 after all) was a buttercup yellow rotary dial. It was SO cool. And such a big deal that I had it to myself.

Dilation

Dilation,  as in eyes.

Not pregnancy or anything related to babies.

Just my eyes.

found via google images

I had an eye appointment today with the an ophthalmologist here in Jacksonville.

I had been seeing the doctor that my sister works with in Lansing, MI, but when I went for my exam in June he found some issues that required me to see someone local to me.  So, now I have a doctor here in Jacksonville.

The Lansing doctor had given me a clean bill of health 2 years ago and then when I returned in June of this year he noticed some leakage.  If you have diabetes it is indeed an extremely serious problem that can lead to blindness.   I really don't want blindness and my vision to be in the same sentence, so we're going to keep up to date with all appointments and make sure I take care of my eyes.

I honestly don't know why I had the leakage issue in June, because I've really been very good about keeping my blood sugars in check.  I take insulin, I eat well, I take my vitamins, etc.  I honestly didn't do anything different the past three months and the problem went away.  It's not cured by any means, but at the moment it's not an issue.  I'm due back in 4 months.

If you'd like to know more about Diabetic retinopathy you can click here to find a quick rundown and see if you are at risk.

I've been a scary sight most of the day with those giant pupils.  Of course it was very sunny today, so I had on sunglasses and I covered them with a thick brochure that I got from the doctors office, plus I had my hands over the top of both of those!

Maybe I was being a bit dramatic, but it was very sunny.

Fingers crossed that I continue to have great eyesight.

Have a wonderful day!

The hills of Ireland.  Every time I see the photos of Ireland that I took I get a big smile on my face.  It's so beautiful.  It's truly the greenest place on Earth.  OK, so I haven't seen all of Earth, but it's been the greenest place I've ever seen :)

Hoarding and Flying

I've talked with two bloggers this weekend about clutter.  They were short conversations, but it was a tangent that I thought needed to be talked about publicly.  I think I'm thinking about clutter because I went shopping this past week and brought home a few things.  I rarely go shopping and when I do, I rarely buy anything, so maybe this whole conversation really started because I brought some items home.

I didn't need anything, but that bowl.  I really did need the bowl!

Have you ever seen any of the TV shows on hoarding?

I find it amusing that I watch these shows and always think - "well, at least I'm not that bad."

I know that I'm not a hoarder, but I also know that I have those tendencies.  It's kind of scary to say it out loud and seriously.

I love FlyLady and I learned a lot from her.  If you don't know about FlyLady, she's a woman ( and a business) that helps you learn how to keep your house clean, among other things.   I think that one thing she reinforced with me,  was to keep my bedroom free from clutter, laundry baskets, non bedroom items, etc.   My bedroom is just that.  A room for my bed.  No matter what the rest of the house looks like, my bedroom - the master bedroom - has very little in it. It's truly a blessing to wake to a room that is peaceful.

My kitchen is clean, the counters washed daily, the dishes washed at least once a day if not more, the fridge cleaned out several times a week.  A FlyLady must is to have a shiny sink.  Funny thing is that's another thing that I have done forever.  I enjoy doing dishes, so my sinks are completely clean and clear when I go to bed each night.  I wake each morning to a clean sink, clean bathroom, clean bedroom.

(This was my kitchen table area when we first moved in a few years ago.  My husband has now completely consumed the area and it's now covered with paperwork.  Many years worth of office stuff on the table, the chairs and the floor.)

The livingroom, dining room, two spare bedrooms and laundry room are a mess. No lie.  A mess.  I have piles of stuff, a coffeetable that I rarely see the top of, a chair that no one can ever sit in and a spare room that is just full of stuff.   Actually, now that I'm looking at my laundry room, it isn't a mess.  Inside the bins that are on the shelves, those are a mess, but the laundry room itself is quite tidy looking.

That orange bin isn't on the dryer anymore, but that's pretty much how it looks. I do love my laundry room and the washer and dryer.  I heart them :)

Maybe hoarding isn't the right term for me because I'm really very good about giving stuff away and throwing things away once I start going through the clutter.  It's the getting started part that needs to happen.

Thankfully my house stays in the same state of disarray and rarely gets worse.  The biggest problem is that when I get it all cleaned up, it immediately returns to the previous state.

I need to get back to the "I can do anything for 15 minutes" mentality.  That's a FlyLady theme and it means that you can get your house clean 15 minutes at a time.  You can also learn a new language, get fit, eat right, clean the car, whatever it is that you want to accomplish you can do it, even if you only have 15 minutes at a time.

I'm not brave enough to show my clutter, but now that I've publicly talked about it, I bet a fire will be lit under my rear end.

Now, about that 50 pounds I'd like to lose.

Have a great week!

On one of my photo jaunts around the city, I happened upon a remote controlled car track.  The greatest thing was that there was a race going on.  I stayed for 20 minutes or so, watching the event and of course, taking photos.  I wanted to get a picture of one of the cars in the air and I cheered when I got this shot!

Looking Up!

I noticed I took a lot of palm tree shots this week so that's a perfect theme for Sundays In My City in my city!  Enjoy looking up in Jacksonville, FL.

This non palm tree shot just had to be included.  It's a familiar subject to me.  I photograph this tree fairly often as this is what I see from my garage at one of my rental condos.

For more Sundays In My City photos, please head on over to Unknown Mami and join in on the fun.

(Also, if you can, please send out a prayer for Unknown Mami on the horrible news she received the other day, that would be wonderful.)

Here's something completely unrelated - but if you were wanting to make a Full Moon Dreamboard, the date is coming up quickly!  It'll be Sept. 23rd (Thursday) 2010.

Thanks for stopping by and Looking Up! in Jacksonville.

Treasures

Here are all of the treasures I picked up while estate sale-ing this weekend.

Several people have used the patterns inside in craft projects.  Of course I can't find a single one at the moment, but I did find some patterns.  I bought a few of them at 50¢ a piece just to see if I was actually going to use them.

These little plates were from my friend Tim's sale.  I got 4 plates and they will be perfect for little treats, a small plate of pasta or a bagel and cream cheese.  I'm actually going to take these to Michigan and add them to my mom's collection, if she likes them, otherwise I'll keep them.

The People first decade ended in 1983 or 1984 - whatever it was, it was my formative years.  I graduated high school in 1984.  This book SCREAMED at me to get it.  The great thing is that it isn't musty!  So I brought it home.  The pie book looked like something fun to use in blog posts or to copy a recipe into a card for someone.  I thought it might be fun to use.

Some snap shots of what's inside.

This photo I kept giant so you can click on it and read the fads.  I wonder what I've done with my mood ring?

Mine.
Mine.
Mine.

This was the treasure.  Strike that.  This IS the treasure.

I have been looking for a large wooden salad bowl for a very long time and when I walked into the wooden bowl room in the giant house I tucked this under my arm as soon as I spied it.

There really was a little pantry type room that was full of wooden plates and platters and small bowls and this, giant wooden beautiful bowl.

After I tucked it under my arm I went out into the kitchen to examine the bowl.  It was a bit worn on the inside but no cracks or gouges and it seems to have been made from a single piece of wood.  A woman who saw me tuck the bowl under my arm (and who groaned when I did so) said that she thought that piece came from Africa.  After she said that, she told me that she had come back for the bowl.  I smiled and told her that I was very sorry for her loss.  :^)

I washed the bowl when I got home and then after it had dried completely, I bathed it in mineral oil.

It's gorgeous and totally worth the $20 I paid for it.

Have a great day!
Kristin

I thought it was a Club House

When I pulled into the driveway of the estate sale, I thought I was in the wrong location. The building looked like a club house to a golf course or something.  It was just two stories but very very long.  The pass through in the middle reminded me of a space for golf carts to zip through at a golf course.

I had no idea that the estate sale was at an 11,000 square foot home on the water.  The above photo shows most of the house.   The round stained glass window is shown near the end of the post from the inside.  The floor to ceiling windows near the right side was the living room.  It had a beautiful view  of the water, but there was too much glare for me to get a good photo of it.

Here's the listing for the house, but I'm terribly disappointed that they only have three photos and two of them are of the same space!  It's the living room & kitchen area that I didn't get photographed, so that's nice but still.  I think they could have gotten a few more photos of the house.  sheesh.

You can see the living room windows better in this photo and the addition of the kitchen is on the far right.  I think it's a hoot that the kitchen is an addition.  As if the house wasn't big enough!  Well, it's a beautiful room with skylights and floor to ceiling windows.  It would make an excellent photography studio with all of that natural light.

This was listed as the detached apartment.  It was pretty run down from the outside, but I don't know about the inside, it wasn't available to view.

I didn't go there to see the house, but to look at all of the treasures.  Well, that's what I kept telling myself as I ooh and ahh'd over all of the house details.  There were some really cool items in the sale though.  These vintage instruments were cool.

Back to a house detail - This window looked out onto a wall.  The wall was painted and then this seashell mirror was designed right into the wall.  It was kind of cool but I don't think I'd like to see that for years and years, though.

More treasures.  I got a kick out of the folding chairs.  I remember when everyone had a set of these wildly patterned vinyl chairs.  One of the thousands of pictures that were in the house.  Seriously, these people had more artwork than I think I've ever seen and I came to the sale on the second day.  In the niche in the brick (below) was a giant piece of amethyst.  This was a small section of it.  I really liked the metal stamps.  They were $10 a piece so I wasn't too anxious about bringing them home, but if I had thought of a way to use them in my house I might have.  They were so unique.

My mom and my sister are both Pisces, so I wanted to buy this bowl for them.  I didn't, but I thought long and hard about it.  It pained me to leave it behind.

I was drawn to this painting.  They wanted $150 for it, so I wasn't drawn to it for long, but I liked the bright colors.   It would have looked so nice in one of my rental condos.

Here is a third of the kitchen.  This might have been the original part of the kitchen and then the section on the other side of the post with the skylights was the addition, but I didn't ask.  It's dated, that's for sure.

This is another section of the kitchen area.  It looks like an outdoor kitchen indoors.  Half of the items in this odd area was missing, so I'm not sure all of this area was used.

The livingroom has a few dozen track lights on the ceiling, but no where near as many lights as there were switches!  This is the craziest bank of household light switches that I have ever seen.  At one of my houses we had a bank of 6 switches and I thought that was bad.

Here's the amethyst and the stained glass window.

This is the driveway leading to the house.  No grand entrance, no brick pavement, no massive gates keeping people out, just a two lane track leading to the 1970s house on the water.

Have a wonderful day!
Kristin

The next post, immediately following will be the treasures that I found this weekend.  Here's the link.

My friend's estate sale

I went to three different estate sales in the past two days.

This one was at the home of a friend, Tim, where we had a garage sale last year.  That was the infamous garage sale where we had the treadmill incident.

*Complete tale of the treadmill incident
*Photo of said treadmill

This man's house was just full of treasures.  He had three walls of copper in his kitchen.  That one rack at the top of the page is nothing compared to what was there.  Since I wasn't able to go to the sale right away on the first day, I have no idea how much stuff they decided to keep, but I bet they kept about a third of the copper.

Tim had statues and tables and records and African masks and copper and paintings and jewelry and and and.  He collected so many different types of things that I was excited to see what was being offered.

It really is hard to describe what all was in the house.

This clock was pretty cool,

but upon closer inspection I see that it's actually a time clock.  Now that's neat.

Many of the items were a bit too rich for my blood.  Paintings with a price tag of a couple hundred dollars, but I did really like the bathroom mirror.  For $65 I'll let someone else buy it.  I did like it though!

The furniture pieces in the house were from so many different eras and styles that it was fun to see what would be lurking in the next room.  This was the rustic wood, bear skin rug, and iron bed room.  The little 12 drawer chest was nifty.  I especially liked the drawer pulls.

This sign is so true!  At the estate sale I attended today I had a bowl under my arm that someone else had just decided to come back for, but it was mine!  I had already claimed ownership and she was just sorry out of luck.  She should have grabbed it when she saw it.

Tomorrow I'll finish up my estate sale posts and show you the treasures I purchased, too.

Have a wonderful weekend!
Kristin

POTD - Historic Triangle

POTD - Historic Triangle
©2010 Kristin Corlett

When I first saw this sign, I read it as the Clay County Historic Triangle.  I laughed and laughed wondering what was so historic about this particular brown triangle.  Was it discovered in some ancient ruin?  Was it made of gold?  Was it originally in the possession of a famous person?

Enjoy!
Kristin

In another post I'll go into greater triangle detail.
