Awesome Envelopes

Have you ever received an artfully decorated envelope? 

Well, Klaus Flugge certainly has.  He was a children's book publisher and those creative illustrator types loved to send him interesting correspondence.  I found this article on the Letter Writers Alliance website with a link to the Guardian.co.uk site. 

Klaus Flugge: 'I am immensely proud to be the recipient and owner of almost 100 envelopes from talented artists such as David McKee, Satoshi Kitamura, Tony Ross and others.

'David McKee came across a book of illustrated envelopes entitled Letters to Georgio by the well known French artist Jean-Michel Folon which inspired him to start the collection. His first few envelopes were displayed in my office, and influenced other artists working for Andersen Press to do the same.' (quote from guardian.co.uk)

I have a stack of cards sitting beside me right now because  I have several letters I want to write.  Sometimes I cut out something interesting and tape it to the envelope, or I print a photo on a sticker label and put that on front - but I don't think I'd ever be able to create a scene like these.  There are a total of 13 envelopes on the UK site.  Be sure and look at them all - They're great!

Driving along the roads of Martha's Vineyard there are dozens of mailbox areas like this one.  Postboxes are added in as the houses are built and the older boxes decaying from the salt air.  I promised my friends that I would only require one stop to a suite of mailboxes like this, but I have to admit that I want to stop at each one and take their picture.   Thankfully there were two mailbox areas on either side of the little road where we stopped so I did get a few more shots.

I was thinking about sending a few letters out this week and while I was thinking about letters I started thinking about mailboxes.  I'm slightly obsessed with mailboxes, as you may have noticed if you've been traipsing around my blog for any length of time.  Well, while I was obsessing over mailboxes I started thinking about the United States Post Office mailboxes and how they are fairly ordinary.  Maybe they seem average because we see them all the time?  Then I started thinking about the round mailboxes I saw in Ireland.  Now those look cool!  ...but do they look cool to the Irish?  or are they average and boring?

These are things I ponder at 2am. 
I think I need to go to bed.

I like little mailboxes, too!  These really are quite small, but those numbers on them and the rust just make them sweet.  I can't imagine trying to fit a magazine into one of them, though.   Bob was driving the car at this point and we were making our way through Daytona Beach.  We pulled through a neighborhood in order to turn back and photograph something we had just passed.  Good thing we turned - this is a great find.

I asked Bob what she wanted to name this aqua blue dolphin mailbox that we found on our day out today and she said Alfonso.   I was totally being dorky and wrote it El Fonzo like the Fonz in Happy Days - actually come to think of it, I wrote el Fonzo.  Too funny.

We found a whole crop of cool mailbox art and house number art in a one block span along this road.  I parked the car along side the road and we took pictures of all of them.  It was fabulous!  Photos coming soon.

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."

This inscription is on the James Farley Post Office in New York City but it is not the creed or motto of the United States Postal Service.  I didn't know it wasn't their motto until I looked it up for this photo of the day.  I think the USPS is going to be really working hard today to fulfill the expectations of the snowed in population tomorrow, even though they don't have an official motto.
