Confit Pots

Confit Pots by Kristin Corlett

While in Alabama my Mom and I went to Fairhope, AL for a little shopping and dining excursion.  Hands down, Fairhope is one of the loveliest towns.  Even in the winter time the downtown area is full of flowers, the trees are decorated with lights and almost every building has a unique shop.  This time we shopped the main road and some of the side streets.  On one of those side streets we found an incredible antique shop called Aubergine.  They had just received a shipment of confit pots, straight from France and I admit, I was instantly in love.

When I inquired what a confit pot was I learned that they were pots where meats such as duck and goose were preserved.  (This is where we get duck confit!) They would bury the pots in the ground all the way up to the glazing in order to keep the contents cool and fresh.  This is why so many of the confit pots have dirt ground into the unglazed portions of the pot.  The chips and imperfections are common as they were used regularly in the South of France.

The pots, so gorgeous, were out of my price range, so the only part of them that I came home with was this photograph.

Enjoy!

How to build a sandcastle sculpture

My Uncle Matthew is a sculptor and I didn't even know it.  When I went to Gulf Shores a few days ago I saw this strange contraption in the garage and asked what it was.  Matthew told me that it was the mold for making sandcastles.   Then he showed me the shovel and his sculpting tools.

I had to see it in action, so I asked if we could go to the beach later that day and he said sure!

Here is the altered plastic trash bin.  There's a rope tied on opposite sides and the bottom of the bin has been completely cut out.  Matthew created a little mound of sand first, then placed the bin on top and started adding sand.

Then he brought out the pickle pail and got water and added that in.  Water and sand.  Water and sand.  This makes the sand easier to manipulate.

When we were in the Burger King business pickles used to come in green pails like this one.  We always had pickle pails in the garage and of course everyone I knew had a pickle pail or two.  It's been a long time since I've seen a green pickle pail.  I'm so happy that there's at least one still in the family.

I think Matthew got into the bin after eat water and sand layer to compact the sand.

The bin is totally full and he has put in the last bucket of water and it letting it firm up.  He taps on the side of the bin from top to bottom, helping to compact the sand even more.  This also helps to release the bin from the compacted sand within.

My dad, in the gray shirt and my husband in the white t-shirt and towel are helping.  Matthew had had concerns that maybe this trash bin wasn't strong enough for too many uses and ultimately the rope pulled through one side.  The boys then had to pull the bin up.  It was no easy task!

Finally the mold was released and the sand for is ready for sculpting.

The first few cuts are drastic, but Matthew knows what he is doing.

He has a knife and a trowel that he mostly used.  Can you see the form that this sand sculpture is becoming?

Matthew told me that the sculptures he makes need to pretty compact because when the sand dries out it just falls off.  He doesn't have a spray bottle or anything to keep it all wet all the time.

At one point during the process, Matthew went to out shady spot to grab a drink and take a breather. This little girl started gathering shells and trying to poke them into the sculpture to make eyes.  She was doing a little decorating and well, her decorating was not appreciated!  Matthew put her to work patting down the sides so she could still be involved and not mess up the vision he had for the sculpture.

Here is the pelican, looking out over the water.  I think Matthew changed a few things on the bird after this shot, but those were just little things.

It's pretty cool, don't you think?

It took a few hours to do it, but boy was it fun.

So much more fun than laying on a towel.

Here's Mr. Pelican watching the smooth Gulf water this day.

My Aunt Marg and Uncle Matthew with the finished creation.

Thanks Matt for letting me photograph the journey from beach sand to pelican.

Enjoy!

Gulf Shores

I've been in Gulf Shores, Alabama for the past two days.

Did you miss me?

Well, I'll be back in my own bed tonight.

The pier at the state park in Gulf Shores, AL

My Dad and my Aunt and Uncle have been over at the Retirement Home (that's what I call the condo in GS in an over 55 community) for awhile, so my husband and I thought we'd visit while they were all still there.

Besides, I'd been home for a few days already, it was time for another road trip!

Usually when I go back to Michigan I only see my Dad once or twice, so hanging out with him all day for a few days has been a real blessing.

My Uncle Matthew made sand sculptures today on the beach and I photographed the process.  I'm waiting for the photos to upload to my storage account, but I don't think I'll be able to stay awake long enough to get any of those photos into this post.  It's going to be Thursday, I bet, before I can get those up.

We've all got something to look forward to!

Hope you're having a great day!

Bubbles! Lots of Bubbles!

The Hangout in Gulf Shores, AL knows what kids like, that's for sure.  A couple of times while we were there a fire engine siren blared and bubbles came pouring out of the front of the red cage.  Tons and tons of bubbles!

Kids came running from the indoor seating, from the giant sand pile and from the far corners.

The bubbles are non toxic, won't hurt their eyes, is edible and from what I could understand it really isn't soap.   These photos are are from a few minutes after the bubbles were dispensed.  It looked like a mountain of bubbles and the first few kids to jump in were totally engulfed in the fluffy clouds.

Scarlett ran over just like everyone else, but she stood and watched a long time before reaching in to feel the bubbles.

She finally walked all the way in at the urging of these three girls.  This is really as far as she would go though.

When she came out, the bubbles only stuck to her hands and feet.  So cute.

Hope you enjoyed a look, once again, at Gulf Shores and the Hangout - for more Sundays in my City head on over to Unknown Mami!

Have a great day!

POTD - Boardwalk to Oyster Bay

POTD - Boardwalk to Oyster Bay
©2011 Kristin Corlett

In the community where the Gulf Shores condo is located there is this very long, lovely boardwalk that runs through the marsh all the way to Oyster Bay.  It's not very often that you can just walk through a marshy area, so this was a real treat.   I really liked the way the boardwalk curves it's way through the marsh.

Enjoy!

Pirate Island Putt Putt

The very first full day that I was in Gulf Shores my sisters, nieces and I went to play putt putt golf at the Pirate's Island.  My Mom stayed with Scarlett in the condo since she's just a little too young to enjoy the game :)

Stella had never played before so her momma is giving her a quick lesson.  Stella and Zora did a pretty good job, but after about 6 holes they both were completely done with actually playing the game.

Zora was so quick to putt the ball, that this is the only golf shot I got of her that day.  Well, that and she only played 6 holes!

A nice family picture in front of the waterfall.

Zora rarely allows a "real" photo - usually she makes a goofy face or has crazy poses.  She jumped up on this rock and asked for a photo.  I wish I had another minute or two to get the shot.  I feel bad that I cut off her hand in the shot.

This was about the time that the girls became more interested in the adventure part of the putt putt and not the actual golf part.

This was the best - Zora was trying to get something out of her shoe so she sat down on the this step.  Stella, not wanting to be left out, also took off her shoe.  She didn't really have anything to look for, so she just put her shoe right up to her face!  Too cute.

My sister Hillary was here this day, too - but she is a lot like me and didn't want to get into any of the photos :)

Have a great day!

Gulf Shores

Here's a little view of Gulf Shores, Alabama that I took last summer.  I like the decay of the dock and boat cover with the hotels in background.

I'm heading to Gulf Shores in the morning to be with my sisters, my nieces and my mom.  I'm so excited to have some vacation time with them.  Usually when we are together I'm in Michigan and everyone has a job or school or everyday household activities.  This time everyone is on vacation! My husband is staying home, taking care of the house and Mocha while I get to play.

Photo of the Day will be suspended for the next week and blog posts will be hit or miss, but I do hope to post something each day.  Be prepared to see lots of photos of my nieces this month!

Have a fabulous day!

POTD - Cafe

POTD - Cafe
©2010 Kristin Corlett

I remember taking this photo at a stop light, but I don't remember exactly where it is just that it's around Gulf Shores, AL.  I'm bummed that the silver pole is in the way, but I love the 217,  the red handle looking things in the lower left, the phone booth, the yellow awning, the red brick and the green trim.   It's one of the few times when I really like how busy it is.  If I could photoshop, I'd have that pole outta there, though!  Next time I go back to Gulf Shores I'm going to have to find this place and actually get out of the car to get the cafe sign.

Enjoy!

POTD - Great View

POTD -  Great View

One beach volleyball net and three birds.  I think this was a prized location because several seagulls came by to demand their turn on top of the volleyball posts, but these three birds wouldn't budge.  What a hoot.

Enjoy!

POTD - Wild Sea Oats

POTD - Wild Sea Oats

Wild sea oats are protected in Georgia and Florida (possible in other states, too) not because it is an endangered plant, but because it helps stabilize sand dunes and reduce erosion. When I think of sand dunes, I think of the beach fences and wild sea oats.   Well, and sand, too!

The sand dunes in this photo are along the Gulf of Mexico in Alabama out along Fort Morgan Road.  Thankfully the oil never made it to the sand dunes, but just barely.  Just a few feet away I saw a whole line of tar balls.

A nice pair of lips

The Palmisano's had a weeks worth of events planned.

They played a card game called Oh Hell, that I renamed Hell-O.  That was fun, but we only got through two rounds because we had a few too many people playing and it took nearly an hour for those two hands.  I guess that's why it was called Oh Hell!

We were all part of a Corn Hole tournament (a bean bag toss game) - actually two tournaments.  One was individual and one was couples.  I did pretty good the second time around.  I figured out how to toss the darn bag, but it took awhile.   I'm now itching to practice!

I learned a card game called Rook, too.  I want to pick up a pack - I liked that game.

But last night, after the egg toss on the beach and the corn hole first place trophy award ceremony, the wax lips were passed out.

Oh my goodness, they were so funny!!  I couldn't resist taking a picture of myself in the mirror.

Steve and I.  The reason why nearly all of the pictures I have with Steve look like this is because he likes to use up all of the personal space between us :)  I teased him about this.  Remember the line in Dirty Dancing where Johnny says to Baby "This is your dance space and this is my dance space."

Well, Steve had never seen the movie, so the quote was lost on him!  But he likes to be close and I'm very used to it, but I did notice that all of the photos of the two of us this weekend he had his head clunking into mine!  Oh my, I love him :)

The brothers.

Those lips look so funny with facial hair!

They look like family, don't you think?

I love this smooch :)

Say Hi to the lips family!

I brought my lips back home.

They hung out on my computer for a little while.

Such nice full lips, but just a bit too waxy for everyday :)

Have a wonderful day!

Carrying on

Wow.

It's been quite a week so far.

I think I've gotten to bed before 3am, zero times since I have arrived in Gulf Shores.

(That's 3am Central Time)

Last night I was finally asleep by about 4:30am.

At that early hour I could have just stayed awake to watch the sunrise!

Steve and I managed to get out photo taken together.

That's Steve's Dad peeking over the top - what a goof ball :)

Here is a photo of most of the family.  I think this is the only time we've used this family room in this house, but that's because on the floor above, that's where the kitchen, dining room and another family room are located.  This room had a DVD player though and someone brought a DVD with family photos.  So this was indeed a group event.

The Palmisano Family reunion shirts were passed out.  I'm so excited, I got one, too :)

and later, Steve made Cosmos in the giant pretzel container and pretended to drink it all himself.  I never did ask the other person in the photo if I could post this picture, so I'm going to leave off his name and ask permission.

Steve made Cosmos one night, margaritas the next and I'm not sure the next two nights.  I'm not a drinker anymore so I just took pictures of the evening :)  and had a good laugh with everyone.

I'm loving this week with my friend's family.  They're already planning next years reunion and I'm trying to figure out how to get myself adopted into the family, officially.  That way I'll never miss an invitation!

I have so much more to tell but I'm so tired.  I'll have to try to get some more posted tomorrow before I go over to their house.

Hope your week is going as wonderfully as mine.

POTD - Seen Better Days

POTD - Seen Better Days

This dock certainly has seen better days.  It looks like it might not have faired too well during the hurricanes of Ivan and Katrina.  Or it might have been something totally different.  Do you see the one set of posts are all kattywampus?  I wonder what happened to them?  Maybe some unfortunate person ran into it with a boat?  Maybe there is a fault line right there at that point and the earth has shifted?

Maybe...  I like coming up with Maybes.

The body of water is called Little Lagoon and it's in Gulf Shores, Alabama.  The decking could be in Kansas for all I know, but the posts are indeed still in Alabama.

Enjoy!

Trespassing

I went to the beach yesterday and decided to take a chance and do a little sightseeing...

by trespassing on properties that were for sale or rent along the Gulf.

I know, it wasn't the smartest decision, but it's not like I was taking a picnic basket and my umbrella and was going to stay for the day.

I just wanted to take some photos...

on someone elses property.

But I was claiming to be scoping out a place to rent or buy!

But no one asked.

It was incredibly sunny and I started worrying that I might get a sun burn so I ran into a surf shop and bought some sunscreen.

I found some very tacky snowglobes.

I found this one area that was supposed to be a condo community, but they never got started.  There was a fairly decent trail for vehicles, so I took a ride down to the water to see the view.

Nice view!  I'm so happy that the developers didn't get a chance to clear the area because I really like how these trees frame the water.

I'm having a blast with my friend Steve and his family.  Right now they are dancing in the living room and I'm alternately snapping photos and blogging.  They are planning another trip next year - I may just sign up.

Hope your weekend was delightful!
