Marbleized paper

At the Turkish Festival on Sunday there was a whole cultural section.  Festival goers could watch artisans doing calligraphy, felt making, wood carving, doll making, carpet weaving, oil painting and paper marbleizing.

The man in the white coat is the artist, Semsettin Dagli Ph.D. and the other man was having some fun by challenging the artist to an arm wrestling match.  The artist lost.  Good thing he makes his living doing something else!

Paints are combined in a shallow tray of water and an absorbent paper is set on top.  When the paper is removed the paints stick to the paper.

In this case, the calligrapher in the next booth over wrote on the page first, then the paper was placed in the marble paint bath.

The artist was allowing this woman to help create her paper.  He would show her a process and she would continue.

She asked for some flowers, so he created a few in the middle of the bath.  I was mesmerized watching.

Here is the paper straight out of the water.

I had no idea it was so easy to do, when the expert was doing it, of course.  But it looks like a fun project to do sometime.

Have a great day!

first off thanks for leaving such a great comment
That turns out very nice. Is it just regular water based paint. Special paper?

Fun to watch those elements that don't seem like they'd go together very well. Paper, moisture, paint...

I think we should attempt this while on the Vineyard...I am sure we could figure it all out and make a total mess of my aunt's house (NOT)! But we should try this!

I think these were oil based paints because they didn't mix with the water, but stayed on top. The paper seems to be an extra absorbent paper.

JB - This might be a fun project! I'll look into it. :)

It reminds me of the Easter egg dye that I use to use to make the marble looking ones!
