Isle of Man

We're here!

We're here!

Coming to you live from the Isle of Man, it's Kristin! :)

We had really nice weather in Ireland but it has been raining and raining some more here on the Isle of Man (IOM.) I finally had to buy a windbreaker jacket this morning. I was going to just buy an umbrella, but I wasn't too thrilled about that because my arms just get so sore walking with an umbrella in the rain & wind. Besides that, I had my bag to carry, too. So anyway, we popped into this embroidery/T-shirt shop to see if they had any umbrellas and in the back of the store they had these windbreakers. They were £24 each (that's roughly $38) and I've never had one, so now was a good time to start. I only had long sleeved shirts, sweaters, gloves and a scarf - everything that would love to soak up the rain instead of repell it.

So far we have taken busses, horse drawn wagons, steam trains and electric trains the two days we've been on the island. It has just been great. We sat up on the top of the double decker bus today just to tour the country. Since it was so rainy, we thought this was a perfect way to see IOM and it was. It was also the warmest transportation we have had today!

My sisters and my mom all went to a cemetery today. I really wanted to go with them, but all of this wet weather has been really hard on my hips and I've had a terrible time being in the rain for any length of time. Standing out at the cemetery reading headstones would have been more misery than joy, so they are going to photograph as much as they can. We are of course specifically looking for Corlett headstones but all of the Celtic cross headstones are just so cool it's hard to pass them by.

Today I saw the Laxsy Wheel (a big water wheel for an old mine), rode the electric train, at a place called The Swan in Ramsey, IOM, bought a jacket and have visted an internet cafe. Tonight I may be seeing someone named Kelly Corlett - she lives here on IOM and she may pop on over to our hotel to say hello. I met her on Facebook when I joined one of the groups about having a Manx name. Anyway, her boyfriend likes Michigan State University, so we brought him a ball cap.

I've just got a few seconds left on my pre paid, non refundable internet minutes, so I'll be talking to you live on Sunday from the good ol' USA. Not sure if I'll get to a place in Dublin tomorrow.

Have a fabulous day!

Magnolia Tree

On my walk to the grocery store last week I happened to look at the Magnolia Trees that I pass by so frequently. Usually I walk on the other side of the street, looking into the shop windows, but today I chose the Magnolia side.

I love the shiny leaves of the Magnolia tree and I even like the brown underside. When I lived in Michigan I had a Magnolia tree that budded all at the same time and bloomed at the same time. I prayed for no rain for the few days that the blooms were open because if the rain came down, the gorgeous tree was no more. Spring is rainy in Michigan and I only saw that tree in full bloom a few times.

Here in Florida the Magnolias bloom for months, a few flowers at a time. So there isn't a time when all of a sudden the tree is filled from top to bottom in blossoms, just a few here and there.

I know this is blurry, it was impossible for me to hold the branch down and stand back far enough to take the photo. I'm too short!

Have a wonderful Friday! I'll be home on Sunday!

Home Sweet Home

I often tell people that I live in a strip mall. In a way, I really do. There is an access road that runs about a mile between the entrance to my condo community behind several little strip malls and then in front of the Publix Shopping plaza.

I parked at the very end of the parking lot so I could see both my condo and the grocery store. Next to the grocery store is a UPS store, an insurance company, a chinese place, a cafe/restaurant, another restaurant/bar, a mini liquor store and a dry cleaner. There used to be a hair salon and a healthfood store, but those are empty now.

I'm still standing in the same spot. Just turned slightly. This is the scene for the entire half mile all the way to my condo - We've got a place called Copelands (it is a New Orleans type place), Arbys, a coffee shop called Java Cove (Hey Bob! They either changed names or sold to someone else - this place used to be called Bad Ass Coffee. I hated seeing that name, but my friend Bob thought it was a hoot), a custom drapery shop, a spa type place, Fed-Ex Kinkos, nail salon, pizza place, cigar bar, Larry's Giant Subs, a game store (I think they sell video games, but I have no idea), a sushi restaurant (but it's also been a tapas place, a sandwich shop and something else just in the last three years), lets see, what else - Oh a bank, another fast food place and a Snap Fitness center. I'm missing about a dozen more stores I'm sure, but you get the idea.

These condos are 5 stories high and overlook another condo community, a little "lake" and of course, the Publix Shopping Plaza. I live in that far back condo building. You can only see a portion of our building - it's sort of tucked in behind the other one. At night the lights are on in the parking lot of the Publix plaza and it always looks like the pavement is covered in snow. I think it's just the way the light reflects, but I love it.

A few weeks ago the lights were out - the whole parking lot was pitch black. It was so odd.

I really like where we live. I like to be so close to so many things. I especially like being so close to the grocery store. I tend to go there daily. It's too easy to buy food for a day when you live next door.

So this is where I live.
I live in a strip mall :)

On our way to Dublin

We stayed our second night in Kinsale, Ireland. Our walking tour was actually a very short walk and lots of talk, but it was very very enjoyable. We learned all about the old wall that surrounded the original ancient city and where parts of the wall were currently located. We learned that the coastline of Kinsale is now all reclaimed from the sea and a lot of the base of the reclaimed area is the old wall. The old coastline is clearly visible by the main street which twists and turns following that now no longer visible water line.

Yesterday we all had to go back to our room and get warmer clothing as the wind was something! The weather forecast called for clear skies, a lovely sunny day and gale force winds! haha They weren't kidding...especially down by the water.

We ate lunch at the market - I had a lovely parmesan quiche. Tom had sausage, bread and cheese. My sister, Alison had a seafood chowder and my Mother had veggies and potatoes. I didn't actually see what she was eating because she was standing up and I was sitting down.

I actually finished this post ooooh about 14 hours ago in Kinsale - but lucky me, as soon as I hit publish, blogger said that it was down for scheduled maintenance. grrrr, so I lost the rest of my post. The stuff above this paragraph must have been saved before the Blogger shut down.

Now I'm in Dublin - we had a rainy drive today. I'll have to catch up with you all later, as it is nearly 11pm here and we have to get up terribly early to catch our flight to the Isle of Man. Finally we have a hotel where the internet is free (and they have a computer) and I can only stay a moment.

I can't wait to share all of my pictures and stories. Thanks for the wonderful messages you all have been leaving.

The Gown (rerun)

This post originally ran June 24th, 2008.

The reason I decided to rerun this piece is because when I was dusting this past week I picked up an item and memories came flooding back. I have a small glass jar on a shelf by the front door that holds a strand of pearl beads and a piece of the bodice fabric from my wedding dress. Every so often I notice that small jar and I smile. I'm so happy that I have just that small jar to hold my memories of my dress. I glued pearl beads (not real pearls) onto tennis shoes that I had also decorated with sequins and lace. So the jar holds my memories of the outfit.

Here's the original post.

This is my wedding dress.

It was such a beautiful gown, but I didn't take care of it. I never got it cleaned after the wedding and it pretty much just hung in the plastic garment bag and took up a lot of room in the closet.

When my husband was going through all of his testing at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, we were still living in Daytona Beach. My husband wanted to get a condo in Jacksonville so we'd be closer to the clinic, but in order to do that, we really needed to lighten our load of "stuff."

I joined Freecycle at that point and started reading all of the things that people were wanting or taking or giving away. It really amazed me. We had all of this stuff that people would come over and pick up! Whooo hoooo!

My dear husband, bless him, loves his stuff. He has such a hard time giving away something that may possibly have value, so the only stuff I could give away at that point was MY stuff.

I saw this message from a gal who wanted two wedding dresses. She was getting married in a couple of months and she wanted to make a dress for herself. Having two dresses to make one made sense to her, so she put out the plea. I read, replied and took photos.

On one of our next trips to Jacksonville I met this gal at a restaurant parking lot and gave her my wedding dress, my veil and headpiece.

I cried a little on the way there.

I cried a lot after.

A funny thing happened on the way to the Mayo Clinic. I got it. I understood that I didn't need the dress to know that I loved my husband. I didn't need to have the guilt of not getting it cleaned and stored properly. I needed to give it to someone who truly wanted the dress.

I found out a few months later that the gal didn't need a second dress. My dress (her dress) fit her nearly perfectly and she got it cleaned and it was restored. She told me how much it meant to her to get such a beautiful gown and how lovely she felt in it.

I was so happy I passed it on.

I will never regret it. It was a great decision.

Have a great day!
Kristin

Day Two - Kinsale

Kinsale, Ireland.

We have gotten up, eaten breakfast at our B&B - I had smoked salmon and eggs - the smoked salmon was more like loks, much much thicker. It was certainly very good, but not what I was expecting...very very rich. I had to leave almost half the salmon on my plate. Today is the market in the middle of town - goodness, the wonderful food that was in teh market - I expected the market to be fruits and veggies, but it turns out it is quiches, brownies, sprouted seeds, dreid fruits, nuts, olives, breads, spreads, cheeses and so much more. I took some photos.

My husband, sister, father and I are all going on a walking tour of the city in a few minutes. It's quite chilly with the sea breeze - I think they said the high was supposed to be 15 or 16c -- I have no idea what that is, but everyone around here is pleased with the forecast, so I guess it will be lovely.

We ate dinner last night at a tapas restaurant right on the harbor. It was quite lovely.

Leigh, I haven't seen any Butlers, but I've been looking. :)

OK, family has arrived, it's time to walk! See you tomorrow!

DIY Notepads

I fancy myself a crafty person - crafty as in making stuff. I like to create. I think my favorite thing to work with is paper. Every new catalog that comes into the house I am salivating over the photos and pages. I want to use them in something, on something, for something!

I just found these tutorials on how to make notepads. It sounds like something that might be just be creative enough, easy enough and doesn't require lots of new equipment or tools.

Take a look, it might be a fun family project or something you may want to do for Christmas gifts, or birthday gifts or just to keep all those scrap pieces of recycled paper together in one or two convenient piles.

Enjoy!

How to make a notepad - Chocolate on my Cranium

How to make a notepad - The Small Object who also has an Etsy shop where she sells a DIY kit with everything you need to make many many notepads. Many Many!

Great tutorial on how to make notepads at Maggie Made It - It's 4 pages, but well worth the read.

I hope I can find some fun papers to bring back from my trip for my new notepad crafting adventure!

Have a fabulous day!

I'm in Ireland!!

I'm in Kinsale, Ireland at an Internet Cafe - we are just south of Cork on the coast. WE are staying at a B&B called The Gallery. It is lovely.

Yesterday and the day before we were in a place called Nenegh (nee - naw) a few hours west of Dublin - Oh goodness, we spent most of our time getting lost and hitting things. We have two vehicles and 6 people, so half the tie we were losing each other and takign wrong turns, but eventually we'd meet up again. The other night at dinner we wrote down all of the things that we hit with our cars - here's the list.

1 - cowgate post (stone of course)
1 - stone wall
1 - almost head on collision
1 - mud hole (one of the cars is covered in a light mist of mud)
3 - hedge rows
1 - traffic cone
1 - side view mirror

Not a bad list if I do say so myself. So far we haven't hit the other cars traveling on the wrong side of the road (oh right, that was us!!) we haven't hit a bicyclist, or a person walking their dog or or or or or or -- but goodness, I swear these roads are not big enough for two cars going in opposite directions.

It's 4pm right now here in Ireland. We'll be going down to the harbor in about an hour. Tom and I wanted to do a little shopping ~(or window shopping) but when we saw the internet cafe we both looked at each other and nodded. Our B&B is less than a block away, so I'll be sure to come back tomorrow and give another update.

I've taken nearly 200 photos - cows, green land, cows, green land, doorknobs, window moulding, floorboards and shop signs. oh and probably some more cows and green land :)

I'll have to get some pictures of my family so that we know we went on the trip with something other than cows haha

It was great seeing your comments Keetha, Leigh and Ruth Ann. Thanks so much! I'm quite surprised at how easy it is to not miss the TV, Internet and Telephone. I wish our phones would work over here, it would be so much fun to twitter and live blog our adventures. I'm doing pretty good at writing stuff down on my pocket mods. I'm thinking my desire for those items will surely return quickly.

One last thing before I go, I started the book Twilight on the plane ride over here and finished it up last night. Goodness, I certainly did enjoy it. I'm SO glad I waited to read it. The long long long flight would have been a lot longer had it not been for such a delightful book. Thanks Marchelle! (Chronicles of a Working Mom - is her blog, I think)

Thanks everyone! talk to you later!

They have arrived! We're ready to go!!
We're at our gate waiting to board the plane to Dublin. Just waiting for my family to round the corner. I'm almost more excited to see them than the trip.Almost
We've arrived in Philly about 30 min early, but of course our gate is occupied. We should be able to deplane in about 15 min.

Stamp Prices going up on Monday

Don't forget!

Stamps go up to 44¢ on Sunday.

So get yourself some Forever stamps or some 2¢ stamps to pair up with the 42¢ ones.

There are going to be some really cool new stamps coming out.

So be sure and get some of them when you run out.

You can find them here.

Last month I told you about my husband's stamp buying mistake - here. So I'm not going to be able to buy any of the fun new stamps for quite awhile. But I probably will get some of the Celebrate stamps for Birthday cards.

Be prepared on Monday morning for the new rate change. Have a fabulous weekend!
Kristin

So long, farewell, auf Weidersehen, goodnight.

Image from Photobucket

In about 6 hours from right now I'll be leaving for the Emerald Isle.

I'm packed, but still have a long list of things to do.

I have to go get a house key made and drop off a info sheet to my tenants (so they know who to call in an emergency)

I need to print out some addresses to take with me, so I can mail a few postcards :)

I'd like to clear off my coffeetable.

The bathrooms need cleaning, the last of the dishes need to be washed and I'd really like to push a mop around on the floors. We'll see.

I'm going to jump in the shower right now, as I have just eaten my last bite of breakfast & that means I need to get off the computer and get moving!

I have posts scheduled to run each day while I'm gone. I hope that a few times I'll be able to find a computer and post an update on my fabulous vacation.

You all have a fabulous week.

My Mom's Kitchen

The Kitchen and Mom in 2001

As you all may or may not know, my husband and I flipped a house last year. We started that project almost exactly a year ago. It was quite an adventure, to say the least. I'm always interested in remodeled homes and seeing inside other peoples homes. It's just fascinating to see how people use their spaces!

Well, my mother just recently finished remodeling her kitchen and the company where she purchased the light fixtures is having a contest. If you'd like to go see what some folks have been doing with their kitchens, family rooms, closets and great rooms, head on over to Rejuvenation and see all the new spaces.

If you'd like to see my Mom's kitchen in the contest - Click Here.

This is the beautiful table she designed the new kitchen around.

Take a look at the fun spaces and vote for your favorite! All you have to do is put in your email address and click the VOTE tag. You can only vote once. So choose wisely - or choose my Mom's LOL

There is this one bathroom that is SO cool! Look here. If I wasn't voting for my Mom's kitchen, I'd vote for that bathroom -- but then again, the voting is for how the lighting is incorporated in the space, not for the cool interiors LOL

Have a great day!

Thrifty Card Display

Welcome to another edition of Thrifty Thursdays hosted by Leigh of Tales from Bloggeritaville. A fun little time to hunt around the house, the garage, someone elses house and garage or even a thrift store or two to dig up some cool finds. Be sure and check out the other Thrifty Finds, from the other participants.

This week I went hunting in my own house. But the inspiration for this came from this photo and the Cafe Cartolina blog. There are several really cool display ideas, so be sure to click over and take a look.

I saw that photo of the cooling rack used to display greeting cards, and immediately fell in love! So I went to my cupboard, pulled out my cooling rack and realized it was probably only good for displaying gift tags lol It's about 8" x 8", so each side is less than 4" - None of my cards would fit. I bet I could find one in a thrift store! I'll have to look, because I like this idea.

This is a Pot Lid Rack from IKEA, which I purchased there for $2.99. What a deal! Only, I don't have any pot lids that need storing. So I came up with my own ideas.

This is the Pot Lid Rack on my bulletin board. I've just used thumb tacks with extra long pins to secure it to the board.
You can put file folders in the spaces if you use them frequently. What a great way to organize them and keep them off your desk.
Here I have my cards sorted out. Small ones on top all the way down to the larger ones on the bottom. It looks so pretty.

You can attach this to a wall and use it to hold wash clothes or hand towels in the bathroom, it can hold those little Martha Stewart "Everyday Food" books, or even those little Pillsbury theme books (like Appetizers, Crock Pot meals, etc) - I think once you look around, you can find a lot of uses for this very thrifty holder.

Have a Wonderful, Fabulous, Thrifty Thursday!

Pioneer Woman Giveaway

Pioneer Woman - Cuisinart Giveaway

If you all don't know her by now, you should. Pioneer Woman is one of my favorite blogs, she lives on a ranch in Oklahoma and she cooks up a storm, has stunning photography and also homeschools her kids. Lately she has been having guests come to her home to give cooking demonstration (Smitten Kitten was her last guest) and she invited a few of her faithful readers to join them for the weekend.

PW, as we affectionately call her, also gives away the most fabulous prizes. In honor of her Blog Anniversary, three years, she's probably going to give away a lot of things, but today is this fabulous Cuisinart. All you need to do is comment on this post and tell her what you're fixin' for dinner tonight. Contest ends at 7pm Pacific time.

Oh, and if you want to read a fabulous love story, and have many many many hours to read it, be sure and check out Black Heels to Tractor Wheels. She's all the way up to their wedding right now - The wedding is a three part story and I've been holding out reading them until she's got all three posted. She mentioned today that the third installment is coming this afternoon or this evening. I'm so excited because the first two installments were posted in March! I'm happy I'll get to read all about her wedding before I leave on my trip.

If you can't figure out what to have for dinner tonight, take a look at PW's recipes. She's got some fantastic meals. Yum!

Have a fabulous day!

Sparkle (rerun)

This post originally ran April 26th, 2008, right here on The Goat. As I was cleaning my condo getting ready for my trip, I used a lot of Sparkle - so I thought I'd find this post and declare my love for this product once again. :)

I just have to say -- I've used this window cleaner since I was a small child. My mother bought it, so I bought it. Not very many stores carry it, but Meijer Stores in Michigan carried it and when I couldn't find it here in Florida I had my husband buy several bottles of it when he drove to Michigan a few years back. THEN, the most amazing thing happened. I was looking for floor cleaner at the local ACE Hardware store in Daytona Beach and there it was - sitting on the bottom shelf, in a gallon jug.

I could hear the choir

ahhhhhhhhhhhhh

I was almost out of the glass cleaner & had seriously been wondering what to do. But no more, no more!

I just recently went to one of the Ace Hardware stores here in Jacksonville, FL and the choir sang again.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

It was there in all it's Sparkle beauty.

This window cleaner doesn't have ammonia in it, it is purple and it is de-ioninzed (whatever that means) and it is one of my favorite things - right next to the Magic Eraser, The Absorber and my dishtowels :0)

Have a great day!
Kristin

PocketMods

An assortment of Pocket Mods that I'm taking with me

I'm finishing up the last of my projects before we go on our trip. Of course I'm making a semi-crafty project. One of the things I thought I wanted was a weekly planner, but after reviewing it, I realized I wanted something more flexible. However, the Weekly Planner from The Storque is just so sweet, you have to see it. They also have a fabulous video on that page that shows you how to fold the paper. It's a lot less confusing than the one from Pocket Mods, yet they are folded exactly the same way.

Pocket Mods has a lot of different ways to lay out your planner, so I chose to use that one. They have lines, grids, calendars, contact sheets, music staffs, story board pages, and many many more. It is really customizable.

Front and back cover of this particular Pocket Mod - Lined paper and a food journal

I printed off a dozen of the Pocket Mods for my trip (at the end of the week!!!) and have gotten them all folded and in my suitcase. I have two of them in my purse as well as a pen and a sharpie.

I need paper to write on while on the trip because I'm blogging the trip - although I won't be guaranteed a chance to post until I get home. I signed up for NaBloPoMo again this month and even though I won't be able to post every day, I will write a post each day - so in a weird way that counts. I have prewritten a dozen posts to run each day while I'm gone - so don't go away. My goal is to have a post a day for the entire year. I haven't missed a day in at least 6 months :) but I'm going for all of 2009!

The interior pages - any of which can be folded to be the outside page.

So back to the paper. I wanted to be sure that I could have something easy to pack, easy to put in my pocket, easy to write on and wasn't a perfect little book that I'd be afraid to write in (for fear of having to cross something out! - the horrors) so the Pocket Mods or the weekly planners are perfect for this. I've used them before, but never got into the habit of using them daily. Maybe I will after this trip.

This is my stack that's going with me.

Go ahead and make your own mini notebook out of one sheet of paper. It's pretty cool.

One last thing - the list of things you need to have on hand (according to the links I posted) - they are in overkill mode. I used my computer, my printer, standard copy paper and scissors. That's it. You don't need a bone folder or exacto knife or a paper cutter. Paper and scissors. It's easy, affordable and fun!

Have a fabulous day!

The Corletts Go To Ireland

My sister just posted this on Facebook. I laughed so hard, I had to share it.
(You have to come all the way over to my blog in order to see the video. It doesn't seem to show up in the readers)

Try JibJab Sendables® eCards today!

I've got the big hair in the sparkly dress. The other person in the sparkly dress is my mother. My sisters Alison (blonde) and Hillary (brunette) are in the dark dresses and my Dad is the dude. :) My husband is not pictured - but then again, he isn't a Corlett lol

In the picture that is static - where you push play - we are not in the same outfits I described above. But in the dance we are in them. How confusing. I don't know why it's different in the static picture. Just wanted to enlighten you :)

Hope you enjoy!!

Fun Stuff

The Kittens of Boxville - I want to read this book. The last book I wanted to read I sent to Stella for her birthday. I wonder if Zora would like this one? Once again I'll have the book sent to me so I can preview it first!

I found the link to this book at Indie Fixx - Their having a giveaway, this book is included in the giveaway. The giveaway goes until May 31st. The deal is, you need to photograph how you have used the free downloads they are giving away. I've used quite a few of them, but haven't photo'd them before I sent them off in the mail. I'll have to recreate them I guess - or do more stuff with the freebies!

More than you can imagine which I found at Kind Over Matter. It's a good idea to remind yourself of this every so often. :)

The First Coast

On May Day, my husband called me and asked me if I'd like to go to the beach. If you know me at all you know that I really don't like the beach...but he just wanted to go spend a few minutes there, not make a day of it. So I went.

You can click the picture above to make it larger, but it's still hard to read. I saw two turtles on the drive over and saw quite a few birds while at the beach. Thankfully we didn't see any beach mice. :)

I found these lovely flowers growing all along the boardwalk to the beach.

This is what my husband wanted to do. He wanted to just stand and look. That crest he's standing on is one giant shell beach. It gets sandy closer to the water, but it's still pretty "shelly."

If I go to the beach in Jacksonville, I usually go to Neptune Beach, which is on the North side of Jacksonville. Neptune beach is pure sand. Soft, glassy, and sandy! This beach (I think it was called North Beach) is about 10 miles south of Jacksonville. I was quite shocked to see the difference in the beaches.

I think the crushed shells are just gorgeous. I couldn't stop picking them up, letting them slide through my hands back down to the ground. The colors, shapes and textures were fascinating. I'd wished I'd had something to take a handful home with me, but I didn't...so I took a picture instead. My new frugal & clutter busting technique.

It was sort of windy, but not too bad. The sun was shining and it was about 83 degrees. Did I mention I was dressed head to toe in black? I'm not a beachy girl. We only stayed about 30 minutes, so I was fine.

This little bird was dressed in black, too. He was following the water line without getting his feet wet.

It was so funny. run run run. Stop. run run run. Stop.

I was standing up on a lookout platform. What a great view down the coast. When I've flown over this part of Florida it's truly incredible how straight it is. One big long line without interruption for a hundred miles or so. High dunes that dip down to the sand and ocean. It's a marvelous site.

Palm Trees

Happy May!
I'm so happy to have this month finally arrive.

Today I found these wonderful Palm Tree paintings at a local restaurant. I took as many photos as I could before the food arrived.

All of these photos are from a local 4th grade class. I won't tell the names of the kids, because well...they are kids. I don't have any permission to post these, but I'm just going to go out on a limb and do it anyway.

I get artwork in the mail from Zora every so often. I wonder what she'll come up with when she's in 4th grade!

I've adapted real well to the Florida landscape. I love palm trees. I love the scrubby palms, the tall palms, the pineapple palms, even the palm trees that have been decorated for Christmas.

I hope you have enjoyed today's May Day post, even though it is nearly May Day-after!

Have a Wonderful Weekend!
