Good Day! I'm so excited about today. I've been waiting for this day for quite some time.

Today is November 11th.

You see, I love to see the clock at 11:11. I do a little dance when I see it. I wrote a little something about it back in March, here. Last night I went to bed early so I could get up early today and when I put down my book and turned off my light, I looked at the clock and it was 11:11. I just knew at that moment, it was going to be a great day today.

I've got so much more to talk about today, but I wanted to make sure I got this post up bright and early, so that everyone could take advantage of this special day.

I've got to take my lovely car into the shop this morning after yesterdays unfortunateness.

Well, I don't think that I associated 11:11 with all of that, but I did think it was fun to see on the clocks and I look forward to it every day. I have been waiting anxiously for this date to come as I just knew it would be a fun day or at least memorable in some way. It has been memorable, that's for sure.

A bumper and a tire

So this is what I did this morning. I was merging into traffic and caught the back end of a flat bed trailer. The trailer wasn't damaged. I actually saw the trailer at one point, but as I was trying to get in behind the truck, I could no longer see the trailer and then all of a sudden I remembered, but it was too late. I'm glad no one was in the car with me, because I hollered out quite a slew of words.

The driver of the truck was nice enough to help me put the bumper of my car into the back of my car - since it was no longer capable of being attached to the front of the car. Neither one of us was able to look at the right side of my car because I was still in a traffic lane. The shoulder of the road at this particular spot was not wide enough for a car. I offered the other driver my drivers license info but he declined saying that his trailer didn't get a lick of damage, which was true. So he took off and so did I, for a moment.

Flap Flap Flap...Flat tire.

I hadn't noticed the flat tire because of the cars streaming by, but I've had enough flats to know the sound. I waited until there was, miraculously, no traffic and I drove my car to the other side of the expressway into a median area where there was plenty of room on both sides of the car. I got out, snapped this picture, then called the Emergency Roadside Assistance phone number that I have handy. I have used that number 4 or 5 times now for flat tire services. Sheesh.

They told me it would be 45 minutes. OK.

5 minutes later a Police car pulls up and the Officer asks if I'm fine and if I need to call anyone and then says that he'll make sure that someone is keeping an eye on me. (That was kind of a weird way of putting it, but OK) He drives off.

5 more minutes later I have gotten in touch with my husband and before I get to tell him about the accident another Police Officer pulls up. So I have to tell my dear husband quite quickly that I'm fine and that I need to talk to this Policeman because I'm sitting in the median of the road and I'll call him back in awhile.

This Police Officer is dressed in a T-shirt and jeans. He offers to change the tire. Just as he's finishing up roadside assistance folks called to ask exactly where I'm located. I canceled their services and thanked them. The Officer finishes up the tire change and I thank him half a million times or more. I drive to my original destination and give instructions to my worker bees and turn around and come home. Somewhere between the time the officer volunteered to change the tire and the completion of the change, I did call my husband back. At that point I thought the damage was just the bumper and the slashed tire - but later I found more damage - like the side panel that was crushed in just above the top of the tire and the side piece of that same panel that was totally pulled away from the frame. The interior wheel wells on both sides of the car were damaged. I'm thinking that had something to do with the way the bumper was attached to the car (and then forcibly detached!)

I have Geico Insurance and when the claims agent on the phone asked if anyone was with me in the car, I said just me and my gecko. He laughed and said "good one!" I have an appointment tomorrow morning to take the car to the auto body shop for repairs. We'll see how it goes.

I've never been in an accident before - not involving another car, that is lol The famous incident of my cousin rolling the VW bug when I was 15 years old (I was the passenger in that car) I don't think that counts. OK, I guess have been in a few fender benders, but never when I was the driver, until today. So, now the deed has been done. I don't ever need it to happen again. I know what it's like and I didn't freak out - so that's over.

Now to see how much damage I really did to the car. I'll let you know.

Sigmond & the Sea Monsters

I just read a little snippet on List of the Day (which by the way is NOT a PG site - hide your eyes for some of their craziness) and they showed this video clip of Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, a Sid and Marty Croft production. The video it's self is from 1973 and is kid friendly.





Several times in my life I've mentioned to people that I watched this show as a kid and only one person in my life had ever heard of it. For a few years there, I thought maybe I was dreaming up this show. After watching the intro in the video, I can see now why no one watched that show and it only made it through 11 episodes! I liked H.R. PufnStuf a little bit, but it was definitely better than this gem.


A plus for the show was that Johnny Whitaker was in it. You probably remember him as Jody in Family Affair - Buffy, Jody, Cissy, Mr. French and Uncle Bill.


I didn't have to many albums as a kid, but I do recall owning this one. I do not recall ever listening to it!


One thing I did learn while cruising through IMDB (Internet Movie DataBase) is that Billy Barty played the small Sea Monster named Sigmund. I had no idea until today. I remember Billy Barty mostly from the Movie Foul Play with Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn, but I also remember him in an episode of the Love Boat (I"m so embarrassed to admit this stuff!) and from Little House on the Prairie (he played in two episodes.) I looked through all of the movies and TV shows he'd been in, but I didn't recognize a lot of them. He must have been in commercials or made a lot of appearances on talk shows or something, because I had seen him long after his Love Boat appearance!

One of my very very favorite Sid and Marty Croft productions was Land of the Lost. I loved that show. Loved it!

How about you? Do you have any childhood TV shows that you loved but aren't too embarrassed to admit to enjoying?

Burial grounds

I have the TV show Property Ladder on right now. It is a house flipping show on TLC. The boys in this episode purchased a house that is rumored to be part of an ancient burial ground. They said in their interview that most people wouldn't mind buying a house in a neighborhood that could possibly be cursed, haunted, on a burial ground, etc. My first thought was, "I'm not buying that house, no way!" After thinking about it for awhile, I'm still not buying.

So I was wondering. If you found a house in a nice looking neighborhood and they told you that the entire neighborhood was part of an ancient burial ground, would you still consider buying the house?

Blogging and Journaling

I started this blog on my 40th Birthday (October 18th) 2006. I wrote exactly two posts that year. I wrote one post in 2007, but I see I've edited it so now it just says "What a year, what a year." LOL I guess I wasn't thrilled with what I wrote.

However, in the beginning of 2008 I started looking for goal sheets, planners, something that could help me focus. I seemed to be all over the place and not doing anything particularly well. I was always in the middle of 90 things and nothing was what I wanted to do. During my travels on the Internet, I came across this blog that listed 101 Things To Do in 1001 Days. This gal had all sorts of big plans and little plans in this list & it looked very interesting and something I might like to do as well. I found the original site, Day Zero, and read through other peoples lists. I spent the next week or two working on my own list of 101 things. In order to be listed on the original blog over at Day Zero, I needed to have a blog. So, I posted my list here and have been keeping up with my blog ever since.

Some of the things I wanted to do were changes in how I do things, like putting away my laundry. A few of the items were vacations I wanted to take. I accomplished one of those vacations this summer when I went to Nebraska with my Mother, Sister and baby niece, Stella. Some of my Things To Do are projects that I want to complete both at home and in business. Others are books I want to read or personal fitness goals.

I am going to have to rewrite a few of them as the time table has passed and I haven't accomplished the goals. A few of the items are not as exciting to me now that I am a diagnosed diabetic - so making a month of menus isn't going to be as fun and I'd rather have something else in its place. I never saw the list as being concrete, you can't change it, type of list. I'm so glad otherwise it would be a huge disappointment if I missed a deadline & wouldn't be as motivating to continue. So those items where the deadline has passed, I'm going to just move the date and actually put the item on a post-it note so it will be in the forefront rather than background noise.

I used to have this list on my desk, but ever since I got my laptop table and put it in the livingroom, I haven't seen my desk in ages! lol

The other thing I started at the beginning of the year is my journal, #41 on my 101 Things to Do list. My 1st Journaling post talks about the journal I bought. It is a journal that lasts 11 years. It is just a few lines to write each day and I have been real consistent with it. I have gone a few days without journaling, but with just 4 lines it was real easy to catch up whenever I got behind. I love the Journal 10+ and am so glad that I finally started it.


This month I joined in with the NaBloPoMo group that asks all members to post every day for thirty days. I've been real consistent with my blog posting, so I thought joining the group would be something fun and not too stressful!


I also thought that maybe I could write up some extra posts talking about my 101 Things To Do list this month and next while I'm in the NaBloPoMo group. Added incentive.

I'm so happy to have visitors that come by and read and comment. I'm also happy to have lurkers who just read. Hi Lurkers!! Thanks for your participation in this fun world of blogging.

I'm famous! for a second

Now that's a teaser of a title, huh?

As many of you may know, I post comments on other blogs all the time. I love to give my opinions and my experiences based on what was written in a particular post. Besides family blogs, I read a lot of decorating and design blogs (and of course I watch Reality TV shows like Top Design, Project Runway, Top Chef, etc.) Last week I was reading an episode recap of Top Design on one of my favorite design blogs Decor8. I commented that I was glad that Eddie got auffed that week. (I was comment #41 - I didn't realize that Becky had answered me in the next comment until just now.)

Auffed comes from Project Runway when Heidi says "Auf wiedersehen" to the contestant who was just voted off the show. I first heard the word "auffed" from the boys over at Project Rungay and I just loved the word and use it all the time now. So I used it in my comment.

Is all of this reality chat making your head spin?

All of this to say, that Miss Becky said Thank You to little ol' me in her recap this week of Top Design on the Decor8 blog because she loved the word "Auffed!"

I feel like a mini celeb.

Works For Me: Toys Worth Buying

Toys? Toys for kids?

I don't have children. I don't usually buy toys for kids, I buy books or clothes. I could give some sort of nostalgic musing about the toys I had as a kid, but honestly, I'm not into toys. So I won't even pretend. But if you do have kids, please go to Rocks in My Dryer and check out all of the links that others have posted on their favorite toys for kids. Tis the beginning of the season to start thinking about presents for kids.

I missed last weeks WFMW because of some unexplained reason. (I honestly can't remember --- I just looked in my journal - I was over at the flip house hauling out trash. Ugh. No wonder I wasn't motivated to write about fun tips lol)

So I've got this great tip 95% written. It'll have to wait until next week.

Two weeks without a WFMW from me - how can I survive??

New phone!

Yesterday I complained about my cell phone. Today Tom and I went to Verizon and bought two Blackberries - one silver and black and the other silver and pink. Guess who got the pink one. I'm actually not a pink type of girl, but the last few weeks Tom has taken my phone instead of his several times. So my choice was A. Exactly the same as Tom's or B. Pink I chose Pink.

I've got it charging right now. I've got the Tips, hints and shortcuts booklet in my lap. I wasn't going to get a Blackberry, I was just going to get a regular phone but when my husband decided on the Blackberry I knew that I was going to have to explain to him how to use it and he was going to call me and say - "I can't figure out how to..." and he'd want me to tell him. If I didn't have the same phone, I wouldn't know what to tell him.

This happens with our cameras. When he wanted a camera, I made him to go to eBay and buy the older model just like I had, so I could explain to him how to use it even if I wasn't standing next to him. He has called several times to ask how to use the camera. I'm so glad I got the same one for both of us.

This phone has internet. That is just too cool. I've already checked my email with it. While on my laptop, I checked my email on my phone - such a dorky thing to do.

The low down is this. We started our service today with Verizon with two temporary phone numbers and on the 9th or 10th of this month our regular cell numbers will be automatically ported into our phones and the temporary phone numbers will be placed into the system for someone else. We can use the Blackberries now and figure them out for a few days, which will be nice. I'm excited.

I'm going to stop writing now and start looking through my instruction manual. Maybe I'll check my email again.

Cell Phone

My cell phone had a minorish melt down the other day. I was talking with my mother on the phone when all of a sudden, blip, she was gone. I tried to call her back, there was no ring. She tried to call me, it didn't ring. I can use my phone menu options, check the address book and the time, but making phone calls or receiving them isn't happening. I did finally call her back on the land line phone so we could finish talking about her kitchen remodel.

My husband and I have been counting the hours until we can switch our cell phone carrier. We have Cingular/AT&T (fewest dropped calls) and we want Verizon. We get dropped all the time. Both of our flip houses were a dead zone. Couldn't get a call in our out half the time. If we did, you had to talk fast because the call would be dropped, no question.

I sent my husband over to AT&T today to find out when our contract was over and he found out if was Nov 9th. He is leaving before the 9th. So he asked how we could switch before he left town and still keep our phone numbers and we were told it would cost us a month fee, plus an early termination fee. For ending our contract 4 days early, we'd be penalized $175. (I think that's what he said)

So it looks like I have to go find out how much it's going to cost to get my phone fixed and see if it's less than $175. Since my husband is leaving town for awhile and I will be leaving the day after he returns we won't be able to get this plan changed until we are both back in town. I can't be without my phone for a month and my phone number is the number used in all of my advertising for our rental condos.

What a mess.

I was so anxious to get a new phone and new plan. This phone that we've had for the past two years is just one of the worst phones I have ever had. I have hated it. Originally I hated it because it was hard to open. Seriously, getting the darn thing to flip open to talk is difficult! Even two years later I have a hard time getting it open. The old phone I had had a great camera feature - you could click with one finger and not even have to open the phone. This phone you have to open it, go to the menu section, scroll scroll scroll to the camera section, click on it and then who knows what - I've only taken one picture with this phone.

Ugh. I was hoping to get the new phone this week. I'm just bummed. Now that my phone is broken I'm even more bummed. Can you see me? I'm totally being dramatic.

I'll be very excited when I get the new phone and I'll let you know when it happens. Until then, Ugh.

It's Working

In September I wrote about the cold that almost was and how I believed that Zicam worked to keep that cold at bay. I wrote about it here - Cough Cough.

I've been working on the flip house in Springfield with my husband and our handyman, Rob. Rob came to work with a cough the other day. I stayed away from him. By the end of the day, my husband was coughing. I stayed away from him as well. As soon as I got home I took Zicam rapid melt tablets (Orange is by far the best tasting) - then I went to the pharmacy and picked up DayQuil/NyQuil tablets for the husband and some more Zicam for me. I got the gel swabs and some more of the rapid melt tablets. The gel swabs are for your nose. You unlock the little tube and swab the inside of each nostril. I actually hated this, but I was afraid that sleeping in the same room as my husband was going to cause me to get this cold. I thought the gel swabs were a better defense. So far it has worked. I had a cough and a runny nose two days after the boys had their coughs, but mine lasted about 2 hours. Seriously, 2 hours. That was 4 days ago.

My husband is finally feeling a bit better. He must have sneezed for three days straight. Now he's into the coughing phase. Yuck. The DayQuil/NyQuil has really helped my husband deal with the symptoms of the cold, but he still feels pretty bad. The Zicam has helped me. I am still taking the rapid melts, but not the gel swabs. Next time I think he'll take me more serious when I tell him to take the Zicam!

I know, this is a commercial for Zicam, but I have never ever found anything that helped me NOT get a cold. If my husband got sick then I was sick. It was just fact. Now if I get that tickle in my throat or if someone around me has a cold, I just take Zicam. I feel like it's a force field keeping all those nasty bugs away from me. I should become a spokesperson for the stuff because I am a true believer.

National Blog Posting Month

I was cruising around the internet last night. I was probably reading blogs and clicking on links in the side bars, reading blogs that are highlighted, stuff like that when I came upon this funny sounding name. NaBloPoMo. Huh? It was a website, so I clicked on the link - like this one...NaBloPoMo and was taken to a website where the idea is for bloggers to write on their blogs every day of the month. Their acronym means National Blog Posting Month, but what I've discovered is that each month is National Blog Posting Month.

For those folks who actually have a professional looking blog site with sidebars where they can put in advertisements or buttons, they show the world they are part of NaBloPoMo. Or a part of Secret Santa or Mommy bloggers, etc. I can't do that right now, so every so often I'll just let you know that I'm still in the game.

While I was on the NaBloPoMo site I was directed to a site called ImageChef to make up some cool badges. The ones you see here today are from ImageChef and I had a blast playing with a lot of the images and putting my name into them. ImageChef is free and you can put the images on your blog or websites with no copyright worries.

I have signed up and will be a part of National Blog Posting Month for November. According to my Google Reader stats I post about 9.1 times per week. I don't think I'll have trouble getting fun information out into blogland. However, this month, I will be on vacation for about 9 days - so I will have hurdles to get over. I will succeed.

The Tree

Tom and I went to look at a house a few weeks back and we found this tree in the back yard. The tree has grown around the fence, moved the fence and has totally been disfigured by the fence, but yet it is still growing strong.

I loved the marks on the tree.

I must have stared at that tree for 5 minutes.

It was becoming a metaphor of my life - Growing up strong and then encountering some problems. At some point trying to push it all aside, but unable to do so, so finally just accepting the situation(s) and worked my life around it. Some of the scars are showing, but they create a beautiful pattern on my life.

I asked my husband what he thought when he saw the tree - He said it was really cool. No deep metaphors for him. However, he had already moved us into that house, built a second floor and had a boat house on that lot before we left the place. The house has a lot of character inside the house, but it needs a lot of work and about half of the money will have to go to repairing the sea wall on this river front home. I decided someone else needed to love the house and live with the tree.

I'm just really glad I was given the chance to see the tree and think about life in a new way.

Sharpies

On my list of 101 Things to Do in 1001 Days, #34 is no new purchases of Sharpies for a year. I also included pens into this goal as well. I'm a writing utensil gal. The pen isle in an office supply store makes my heart beat faster, but the Sharpies...oh the Sharpies. The click top pens are my absolute favorite - no cap to lose and it only takes one hand. Grab, click and write.

I wrote on my list that I couldn't buy any Sharpies for a year, but as I recall I purchased a pack just a few days before I wrote that list. It was probably that purchase that made me realize that I had a problem that needed to be addressed. (I write addresses with Sharpies! hahaha)

Now one thing I've noticed the past 9 months is that I do indeed use my Sharpies and I've actually worn them out! I've used up almost every single of them that I've had in the house. The favorite colors ran out first of course, so I haven't had a purple Sharpie in a really long time. Black is gone and so is dark blue. The light blue one just gave up all ink last week as I was addressing envelopes for the Birthday Giveaway gifts. I think I'm down to brown and silver in the regular Sharpies and I may have a few in the ultra thin (non clicker) variety. I think I'm going to make it with just enough ink until my January 21st, 2009 date.

My Christmas Card envelopes will have to be written with something else though - no way the Sharpies would make it. I'd run out of ink half way through.

I really like to send out Christmas cards, but I'll leave that for another day.

Actually, I call him Daddy when I say hello to him on the phone. I don't ever realize it until I'm at the very end of it and think how funny it is that I call my father, daddy.

Then conversation ends with my Dad saying "Adios!"


From the end of the Daddy part it becomes an adult conversation lol My Dad calls me Bud. I've been Bud for as long as I can remember. My sisters are Sprouts. "Have you heard from the sprout recently?" is how he would use it in a sentence lol

If my calculations are correct, my Dad turned 65 today.

Springfield kitchen

The flip house we are renovating near downtown Jacksonville, is getting it's final touches. My husband told me that we'd be done in a week (about two weeks ago) but I'm fairly certain we've got another two weeks to go.

This is the tile that is going up in the kitchen. I thought it was a little blah - brown and beige - but I allowed my husband to go pick it out, so I'm not going to complain. It actually looks pretty good in there. It will look even better once it's grouted.

The countertop is beech butcherblock, just like the one we used in the Jupiter house. We had a big chunk of the butcherblock left over from the other job, so when I went to IKEA a few weeks ago I picked up one more piece and the countertop was complete. It is so inexpensive. The piece I picked up was $130 or so. That's just an incredible price for such a great looking countertop.

I'm in charge of the painting in the house. Yesterday the man we have hired to help and I caulked crown molding, chair rails, nail holes, around the windows and everywhere else that needed it. I also painted two doors. I have about 6 more doors to go and since it is pretty chilly in Jacksonville today, it will probably take a bit longer for the paint to dry today. Ahhh, the joys of painting.

So I'm off for the day. Painting and caulking and listening to the boys yammer on and on. Maybe I'll bring my Monster Ballads CD.

Green Onions

Green Onions.

I love Green onions. I don't however enjoy cleaning them and getting them ready to chop up. So what I do is I clean and cut up a lot of them all at once. That way I can just toss green onions into my salads, in my scrambled eggs, into anything I want really without having to spend any extra time after the initial cleaning and chopping.


Here are my beautiful Green Onions. I've cut off the root ends and have peeled off the top layer and cut the tops a bit. I like the green part of the green onions, so I leave a lot of it for me to chop up.

Sometimes I chop green onions into little rounds but normally I cut each piece lengthwise first. This makes it so that I don't have little wheels rolling all over the place. When I cut little rounds I swear that half of them roll off the cutting board onto the floor.



I line up the green onions and chop chop chop. I chopped up the rest too, but stopped to take a picture.

Then I gather it all up and put it into a plastic container and toss into the fridge. If I don't use them all up before hand, these will last a week in the fridge.

I precut a lot of my foods to make it easier in making salads mostly, but just to make putting together something quickly and not dirtying up a bunch of dishes. I shred cheese, chop broccoli, brown ground beef, brown ground turkey breast, red peppers (my husband likes those,) and many other food items.


This is what prompted the green onion chopping session - I decided to use the last two summer squash that were in the fridge, some of that fabulous spinach, the already browned ground beef, eggs and some green onions. It was delicious! My husband came home as I was making this, so he even got a little bit. I only put in two eggs so it was a little skimpy for two, but still, it was real good.
