Hello Friday!

and Saturday and Sunday and Monday... but WOW - it's Friday again!  Last week I said that it was a short week and all of a sudden it's Friday again.  Seriously, how can these weeks keep peeling off the calendar at this rapid pace.  I can almost hear them as they fly away.  On Sunday it will be the first of August.  I'm truly amazed.

I spotted this in the window of a shop - it reminded me of a purse my mom had when I was growing up.  It was a wooden box purse and it had daisies on it.  I don't think it was an Enid Collins purse (shown below), but it very much could have been. 

This is sort of the style - only her purse was a small rectangle with white daisies.  I loved that purse.  I'm pretty sure she still has it - do you still have it, Mom?

I have a list of 101 Things to do in 1001 Days.  In December I went through and made a commentary on nearly all of the 101 Things whether I had done them or not.  I accomplished a lot of them,  I made some excuses for some, crossed off several that were no longer things I wanted to do and gave a little sigh about ones that I had good intentions and hoped to get to this year.

Well, I'm guaranteeing that most of the items on the list that aren't done, aren't going to get done, but there are several that I'm going to finish up.

I started by 1001 days on January 21st, 2008 that the end date is my Birthday in 2010.  My birthday is October 18th and I've decided to have my birthday party in Michigan.  I'm really getting excited for the end of this 1001 days and I'm looking forward to making up a new list!

This is a great idea when you've got those little cables waaaay in the back in a hard to reach place.  I know I've been on my hands and knees several times trying to find that little speaker plug or the power cord to the router that I dropped behind the storage rack.

Bubbles Under the Boardwalk

In May I went to the beach with two of my friends and I asked them to blow bubbles while I tried to capture it in a photograph. I submitted one of the photos from that bubble blowing session (the one above) for inclusion in a book. Yesterday I received word ---

"I am delighted to let you know that your artwork has been selected for inclusion in Patti Digh's upcoming book, CREATIVE IS A VERB: If You're Alive, You're Creative, set for publication in November 2010."

I'm just thrilled!  I had never asked anyone to be a part of setting up a photo shoot before, usually I photograph found items, so this was especially fun to share with my friends.  I may have to stage a few more events to photograph!

POTD - Twenty

When I went to Rome I had this idea that among other things, I wanted to photograph numbers.  I assumed that the numbers would be all different shapes and sizes and interesting forms considering the age of the city.  Turns out that most of the numbers I saw were in this Latin style.  It wasn't as exciting and interesting as I had hoped...however, this image was fabulous!  The number was so perfect in the midst of all of this destruction.

Label Snob

I'd say for the most part that I'm a name brand kind of gal.

No, I don't mean Gucci and BMW.

I mean Del Monte, Ziploc and Mr. Clean.

I just find that the name brand items are softer, tastier, thicker or whatever else they product needs to do, it does.

Usually the way I find out if a store brand or an off brand is comparable is if one is really on sale, like a two or three dollar off the name brand type of sale.  Then I might try it.

Another way I end up trying the other brand is if the grocery store is out of the product I need in the brand I want.  One day the grocery store was out of the parchment paper that I normally buy (which was the store brand) so I opted for the eco brand.  I've had that roll of parchment around for over a year now and finally just wadded it up and used it as packing filler for something I mailed out.  I hated it.  It wouldn't tear properly, it was so thin that whatever was placed on top leaked through and when we did a fish in a parchment bag technique it actually burst open in the oven.  Sad state of affairs, let me tell you.  I gave that parchment paper a lot of tries before I banished it to the back of the cupboard.

When I tell people about Mr. Clean Magic Erasers I always stress to buy the name brand first to how the magical product is supposed to work.  If you must try an off brand for the next purchase you'll have something to compare it to -- and so far I haven't heard of a good replacement for this name brand.  I've only tried one other brand and won't stray from Mr. Clean's MEs again. Pinky swear.

Don't even get me started on aluminum foil.  I've tried a few dozen off brands and nothing compares to Reynolds Wrap.  I use it so sparingly that I only go through a roll a year, if that, but I don't plan on changing from that product ever again.


I do like store brand walnuts, frozen baby peas, frozen chopped spinach, and other assorted frozen veggies.  Canned mushrooms and some canned fruits are also on the OK-to-buy-the-store-brand list. Kleenex is not.  I only buy Kleenex brand.  Not the aloe, not the extra soft, just the regular Kleenex.

Hmm, maybe I'm just incredibly picky!

I do know what I like, that's for sure.

In the 80's there was the Generic Brand.  Do  you remember that?  I looked all over for a photo of the generic brand but the only photo I found was of Generic Beer. The one I am familiar with had just a white label with black wording.  No photos no frills.  I remember my mom used to buy the canned peaches.  They were really good.  My mom also used to buy the bags of puffed rice and the Cheerio's generic.  Wow, puffed rice.  I haven't thought of that in years.  I really liked those.  :)

It's interesting that the name brands that I buy are for cleaning and packaging products and the generics or store brands that I do use are food. 

I don't know why I thought of this little rant and rave, but it came from deep inside and I had to get it out.

I'm a label snob.

I freely admit it.

**The Heinz Vinegar bottle is one of my contradictions - I bought the little bottle because I liked the label and the glass bottle and keep this in my kitchen.  I however fill the bottle from a large gallon jug of cheap vinegar and keep that jug in the laundry room.

I mentioned in my Fun Stuff on Sunday post that I downloaded this fun little frame and I immediately tried to take photos with it.  Turns out that I couldn't take a picture of it with my fancy dancy camera - six ways from Sunday I tried, but it didn't work.  I took this photo and about a dozen more with my new cell phone.  I'm sure with a little more practice I will be able to get the frame a little clearer.

The picture in the frame is a Thomas McKnight painting (although mine is a serigraph) and one of my favorites in the house.

A Day at the Beach

I spent an hour at the beach the other day. 

I was in long black pants and tennis shoes. 

I wasn't planning on staying.

I had just gotten my hair cut, so at least that part of me was totally stylin'.

What I was really hoping for was the get some great shots of beach umbrellas. 

That was my goal. 

Things have a way of going in a completely different direction when I'm going out to shoot a specific thing. 

The SS Gulfamerica
This marker commemorates the attack on the SS Gulfamerica on April 10, 1942 during WWII by a German U-boat just off the coast of Jacksonville Beach. 

It's an interesting historical marker.  If you'd like to read it, you can click to enlarge it.  I didn't know that there is a sunken WWII ship just a few miles off the coast.  I learned something :)

I really liked what was in the bicycle rack.  It had these two bikes that were just a hoot.  This reddish pinky yellow bike was just an odd color.   I liked it, but it was truly odd.  The flower piece that held the chain (you can see real bicycle expertise coming out can't ya!) was two toned.  It made it look even more flower-like.

This bright yellowy green bike was so funny and it was in the same bicycle rack as the red one.  The little outfits on the chimps says "Laugh now but some day we'll be in charge."

ha! ha!

I finally ventured over the walkway and got myself to the beach. Nearly every time I've gone to the beach here in Jacksonville I've been miles away from the pier, but this time I made sure that I got close.  It's a nice looking pier.

I hear that there's some pretty decent fishing from there, too.  I may never find out about that though :)

Here's my umbrella shot.

This was a fun shot because I was in the car, in a parking spot, and I was on the phone with someone but I wanted a photo of the long haired surfing guy.  I finally got my camera out, the window down, the phone cradled between my ear and my shoulder and as I was pushing the shutter button this guy goes by on his skateboard carrying his surf board!  You can't tell, but that guy was cruising. 

This was the unexpected shot of the day. 

So this is what happened to my umbrella plans.  I didn't get a really cool umbrella shot, but as I was heading to the car I saw this.  I laughed.  Yep.  Sometimes the umbrella plans just fall apart :)

The other day I talked about Pretty Houses and showcased several houses in a neighborhood where I had gone for a walk.  I photographed many more houses than just the ones in the blog post.  This one was just sitting there waiting for the spotlight.  I really liked the way the moss hangs down near the top of the frame, the flower box that's above the front entry and all of that red brick.   The condo I live in is pretty generic compared to the lovely houses in this neighborhood :)  I'm grateful their beauty is just a car ride away.

I found a fun site today - it's called Clouds 365 - a project by Kelly DeLay.  He wanted a creative everyday project and decided to take a photo or video each day of clouds.  He started this project last year on July 1st, 2009, so his first year has commenced, but he's decided to venture on to year two!  I love cloud photos and he has a beautiful site.

I just realized that it is nearly midnight.  I've been clicking links and literally playing online all night.  I only blogged about three things that I found tonight, but I think I looked at nearly a hundred.  I now want to make twenty things tomorrow, but I think I'll print the photo frame and do that one first.  I'll show my results on Monday.

Lunchtime atop a Skyscraper

Lunch Atop a Skyscraper (New York Construction Workers Lunching on a Crossbeam) is a famous photograph taken in 1932 by Charles C. Ebbets during construction of the RCA Building (renamed as the GE Building in 1986) at Rockefeller Center.

The photograph depicts 11 men eating lunch, seated on a girder with their feet dangling hundreds of feet above the New York City streets. Ebbets took the photo on September 29, 1932, and it appeared in the New York Herald Tribune in its Sunday photo supplement on October 2. Taken on the 69th floor of the GE Building during the last several months of construction, the photograph Men Asleep on a Girder shows the same workers napping on the beam.  from Wikipedia

Have you ever seen this photograph?

I see it every so often at the poster stores.  It's an incredible sight, that's for sure.  Can you imagine hanging out on an I-beam 70 floors above the ground?

My semi fear of heights kicks in just thinking about it. 

Semi fear = my knees get weak when I get too close to the edge.

Actually I say my "Wees get kneak"

That makes me laugh every time.

Yesterday as I was leaving my house I saw this truck in the parking lot of the sandwich shop across the street from my condo.

I had left exactly on time to make it to my meeting, but I knew this wasn't going to be in this same spot when I got back home.

So, I stopped and clicked.

Doesn't it look like they are holding laptops? 

I couldn't figure out why these guys looked so weird.

But when I saw this close up I figured it out.

Do you see those ankles?

They are stuffed people forms with real clothes and then the whole thing was painted silver.

Do you see this guys glove?  It looks like they missed a couple of the fingers with the paint.


Even though it's a scary copy of the original photo, it's still very cool.  I'm glad I had my camera with me - but I'm also very glad that I wasn't late to my meeting :)

EDITED to add (22 Aug 2010) - The truck and these boys did come back. The truck and the beam that the construction workers are sitting on got decals put on them for Larry's Giant Subs. I'm glad I got the photos when I did because they aren't logo'd up...but I am glad that I get to see these guys when I leave the house. It's kind of fun.

On Facebook last month I just kept seeing all of these posts about how so and so is ready for the kids to be out of school.  Some folks even mentioned the lazy days of summer.  Today when I was at the office supply store and the grocery store, both places had a large section devoted to Back to School.  So have you found the lazy days of summer?  Are you ready to have the kids back in school?  My summer hasn't been lazy, that's for sure.  I've been screaming through it like a rollercoaster.

Aren't these just the cutest looking light covers - They are called Cupcake Lights because they are made with cupcake liners. I don't make cupcakes, but I have liked all of the beautiful liners that seem to be a growing trend. I found this over on the Dollar Store Crafts website.

I read about this branding tip the other day and it's amazing how much sense it makes and it's easy.

This photo is one of mine, so when I name this piece, the tip is to  put my name in with the image name.  It helps in branding the photos.  You could put your watermark on all of your photos, but in doing a search, the watermark is not searchable.  The hope is that the photos will be searchable by name this way.

0155 is the actual photo number in that folder.

-1 means that I have resized it for my blog

I really should have a specific name for this photo like sunset photo with number five and that would be much more descriptive than 2190155, but for most of my photos I'd like to just know where to find them in my files rather than give them fancy names.

So the tip I found to be so helpful is that if you want to brand your photos you need to edit the name of the photo to include your name.   It makes me wonder why I didn't think of it a long time ago!

A second tip that goes along with the last one, is to put "Title of photo by Artist name" under each photo in your blog.  When people come to your blog through various means they don't always know your name or read your about page.  So if you are trying to make a name for yourself, then label your photos.

I have to start doing this again.  I may go back and start labeling all of my Photos of the Day.

I picked up one hundred and forty photos that I wanted to put on cards and turn into Christmas cards for my Etsy Shop.  They look awful.  I think I uploaded the wrong photos.  The right pictures, but I don't think I loaded in the ones that were too dark.  Ugh.   It is truly amazing how the images on the screen can be totally different looking once you print them.  Usually the images look incredible when they are printed and I'm just tickled.  This was truly a disappointment.

The price of the Amazon Kindle has gone down.  It's gone down a lot since I purchased mine.  I heard that the Kindle may be no longer necessary since the Kindle app can be downloaded onto the iPhone or the Droid.  I really have to disagree.  One of the main things about the Kindle that makes it so great is that it is not backlit, so it doesn't hurt your eyes.  That feature cannot be replaced by a phone, no matter how great that phone is.  I don't want to read my books on a phone.   I love my Kindle.

POTD - Washed up

I set up a photo shoot on my patio a few days ago.  I needed to take pictures of my note cards, but I wanted to have some props to use.   This was one of those props.  It's a wide squat glass jar that contains a bunch of bits and pieces of goodies that I found on the beach.  I have an oyster shell, driftwood, rocks and shells.

I got a new phone today! :)

It's the LG Ally, part of the Verizon Android series of phones.

I had a Blackberry, that I loved, but there were some extras that I have been wanting and the Blackberry just didn't have the capabilities.  Yesterday was first day that we could upgrade our phones and get a discount, so we waited a whole day :)

Yes, Tom got a new phone, too.  The same as mine.

One of the things I really really wanted was a GPS.  I've been wanting one for a few years now and just recently I decided that I had to get one come hell or high water and get it soon.  Well, it's included in the new phone I got today.  Oh boy oh boy oh boy!

Because I got a new phone I have spent nearly the entire evening trying to figure out how to use it!

Since I spent the entire evening playing with my new phone, I didn't even think about writing a blog post.  I can't believe that happened.

I know I said I was trying to figure out how to use it, but we all know I was playing :)  You can't help but play with these phones.  They are so much fun.

I'll have a lot to share in Friday's post because it's Friday Fragment day and because I missed today.

Every time I go to the beach here in Jacksonville I think it's funny that there are street signs erected in the sand.  Intellectually I get it, you need to know where you are in relation to the world off the beach.  Where you parked your car, for instance.   In Gulf Shores, Alabama there aren't any street signs in the sand, but the lifeguard stands are numbered.  We usually park by number 2.

Saturn is visiting Libra

I think that horoscopes are mostly fun and frivolous and the daily horoscopes that I see everywhere are so generic that they end up being just plain silly.  I do believe, however, that many people truly are their signs and I am one of those people.  I am my sign.  I am a Libra.  I will weigh things back and forth so many times that I can make my own head spin.  

Back in the day when I was about the only overweight person that I knew, Libra tendencies are to be round and curvy and I proved that point.  These days it's not as easy to spot a Libra on the curvy factor alone!   They say that Libras are lazy and while it's very true that we do enjoy leisure and rest,  we can and do work very hard.  We can look very relaxed while working hard :)  Blogging, for example, is one job that looks like relaxing but it involves quite a bit of discipline and maintenance to keep it going properly.

As for rest, I need sleep.  I cannot go for days without sleep or limited sleep.  When my husband was in the hospital I would leave to go to the hotel to sleep.  Some people couldn't leave to do that, but I'm a Libra.  I know deep into the core of my being that if I don't get enough sleep I am of no use to anyone. 


Sometimes I believe that the reason there are horoscopes and why I read them is to give myself a reason to get off the couch and do something.  Well, the horoscope I read yesterday was pretty exciting.  It just made my heart sing.  I don't think I've been cutting corners, but I have allowed myself to be slack in getting my projects done on time.  I've been putting myself in high gear the past few weeks and reading this just validated my vision.

I love it when I get a kick in the pants and I'm excited about it!

A neglected plant in a beautiful blue and yellow pottery planter.  I think that the restaurant that probably owns this pot just throws water at it every so often when they are mopping their patio.  This pot was outside the restaurant on the other side of the gate, so it truly was neglected.  I almost wanted to get a few containers of flowers to plant in the pot, but then decided that the scrubby bits that were left were probably the best it was going to look.  When I realized that, I was fine with the way things were. 

Have I ever mentioned my love of pottery?  Did you notice that this one has a cut out at the top.  Totally cool!  swoon.

Louis Sullivan Documentary

On Saturday afternoon I did something pretty unusual.  I went to the movies, which is pretty rare, but I went to a documentary.  Very rare indeed!

Here I am at the 5 Points Theater.  It's an old theater which can be a lot of fun or it can be just awful.  Well, in this case it was a very nice old theater. 

The seating was odd though.  They were literally chairs with little end tables every so often.  It was quirky but fun.    I did need to make sure that I didn't sit behind anyone that was too tall.  Thankfully I could see just fine.

The documentary that I saw was called "Louis Sullivan - The Struggle for American Architecture."  I went to the 2pm showing.

This was only the fifth showing of the film.

I loved it.

This is the Director, Mark Richard Smith.  He was the Researcher, Writer, Director and Narrator.  He was probably chief bottle washer, too :)

I'm not going to talk about the movie at the moment, but I will tell you that I enjoyed it so much that I took notes.  Seriously.  I took notes. 

I have quite a bit of research to do justice to the movie and to Louis Sullivan, that I need a few days - so this is just a teaser.

POTD -  Room with a View

I didn't see any stairs leading to this 76 gasoline ball in the sky, but there has to be some.  I mean why would there be windows, several sets of windows, if there wasn't a way to look out of them?!

A few weeks ago, I dropped my husband off at the dealership so he could pick up his car from the service area.  I left, following the signs through the back lot to exit at a traffic light (a good idea in this busy area of Jacksonville) when I spotted this icon.  I hadn't seen one in years!  So I drove through the "dealership employees only" section to get close to the ball.  I'm a rebel like that.  :)

I couldn't stand it! I had to know what the windows were for =)

Until the end of 2003, 76 balls were located at the Daytona International Speedway. They were used as scoring points, had portholes, and were capable of holding a few people inside. One of these "balls" was given to the owner of Brumos Motor Cars in Jacksonville, FL, and now sits atop a building on the premises after ConocoPhillips terminated its NASCAR sponsorship. Similar balls had been placed near pit entrances at most NASCAR circuits until the sponsorship ended.

This would be the best tree-house ever!

Awww, Thank you!! I knew there was a story, but I was up waaay early this morning and just didn't have it in me to find out the reason.

Funny thing is that I used to live in Daytona and liked seeing the 76 balls at the speedway. My husband just told me that Mr. Brumos was a racecar driver, not in NASCAR, but the Grand Road Racing circuit I do believe.

I love the conversations that come up because of these photos that I post :) Thanks Lori!

I remember summer trips as a kid and how we would be on the lookout to be the first one that saw a "Ball of '76"; what fun memories! Your POTD really made my day today, thanks for sharing =)
