POTD - Caesar's Skirt

POTD - Caesar's Skirt

I was intrigued by the decorations on the statue of Caesar at the forum in Rome. It looks like there is a sheep's head, a lion's head and even a human head on the skirt.  Is it called a skirt?   I tried to look up information on this statue and I couldn't find a thing.  There were actually several statues along this roadway, near the Forum.  I'm sure if I researched hard enough I could find out all I needed to know - but Googling Caesars Skirt didn't reveal much. :)

Enjoy!

Your Caesar's Skirt is called a Pteruges, which is Greek for "feathers". The ceremonial armor was usually made of leather with an under layer of wool (hence the fur peaking through). The heads denote the power Caesar held over the Empire of Rome (Italy) and each head was symbolic of a city or state that bowed to Caesar as ruler or dictator.
Beautiful picture!

Love the detail you got in this shot. I did google for awhile and found nothing about the heads on his skirt!

Love all of the lines/dimension. I, too, am drawn to interesting detail like that.
